09-05 Developing a Practical Guide to Applying Folkloristic Approaches in Museums

Co-Chairs: Michael Knoll and Wenhong Luo.

Sponsored by the Folklore and Museums Section, New Directions in Folklore Section, and the Independent Folklorists Section.

This forum will serve as an initial discussion of the potential development of a practical guide for museum professionals on applying folkloristic approaches in their work. This effort is linked to the developing AFS partnership with the American Alliance of Museums and recognizes that as museums increasingly engage in deeper collaborations with communities, emphasizing local knowledge and shared authority, there remains a need for systematic guidance on implementing these approaches effectively. This discussion will explore the frameworks guiding this effort. Attendees are invited to contribute their perspectives to shape a guide that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative museum practices.
