Launch of the WHO Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE)

The Simone & Edouard Schouela RUISSS McGill Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health of Seniors (Schouela CEDurable), part of the McGill University Integrated University Health and Social Services Network (RUISSS) and based at the CIUSSS of West-Central Montreal, is pleased to invite you to the Launch ICOPE.

The event will take place on April 22, 2026, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM, and will be offered both in person and online. It will be followed by a networking cocktail reception from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, held in the same room.

On this occasion, Dr. Matteo Cesari will present the conference Improving Care for Older Persons: From Research to Public Health and will discuss the challenges and opportunities related to integrating evidence-based practices into health systems in order to support healthy ageing worldwide.

About Dr. Matteo Cesari

Dr. Matteo Cesari is a Scientist in Geriatrics and Gerontology at the World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, Switzerland). He is also Professor of Geriatrics at the University of Milan (Italy; currently on leave), where he had been serving as Director of the Geriatric Fellowship program before joining the WHO. His research activities are strongly focused on the management of frailty and strategies aimed at preventing the onset of functional impairments in older people.

Dr. Cesari has published more than 650 articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals in the field of geriatrics and gerontology (h-index>100). He also played the role of Editor-in-Chief/Associate Editor in several peer-reviewed scientific journals and Coordinator of international task forces and working groups for scientific societies.

Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE)

ICOPE is a WHO initiative aimed at promoting healthy ageing by focusing on the preservation of five intrinsic capacities: sensory capacity, cognitive capacity, mobility, vitality (including nutrition), and psychological health. ICOPE promotes an integrated, person-centred, and community-based approach to prevent, detect, and manage early functional declines associated with ageing.

Already implemented in more than 40 countries worldwide, ICOPE supports health systems in delivering coordinated, evidence-based interventions. Schouela CEDurable is the first centre in Canada to officially implement the ICOPE programme. The implementation of this initiative is led by its Scientific Director, Dr. Gustavo Duque, marking an important milestone in the development of integrated care for older adults in Canada.
