2027 ALPM Call for Submissions
Welcome
The Canadian Society of Palliative Medicine invites you to submit your presentation proposals for the 2027 Advanced Learning in Palliative Medicine Conference, which will be held from April 29-May 1, 2027, in Ottawa, Ontario.
The conference aims to provide a forum for sharing and discussing the latest research, best practices, and emerging issues in palliative medicine. Presenters of interactive and/or complex case sessions will receive a 20% discount on the registration fee.
RESIDENTS - The top 3 scoring submissions, submitted by CSPM Resident members will receive a grant to cover their ALPM registration fee. All submission categories are eligible, but Interactive Presentation and Complex Case submissions will be prioritized.
The ALPM Planning Committee is accepting submissions for three types of talks:
Interactive presentations
Complex case presentations
Virtual posters
Conference Objectives
Apply acquired knowledge in advanced palliative medicine to treat patients living with a wide range of life-threatening illnesses
Educate medical colleagues (practicing physicians and learners) about palliative care
Recognize the importance of advocating for improved access to palliative care in local, regional, and national settings
Submission Guidelines
Completed and submitted conflict of interest (COI) forms are MANDATORY for all presenters (including your co-presenter, if applicable) for your application to be considered complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the ALPM review committee. It is the duty of the primary presenter to ensure that your co-presenter has completed their COI form by the submission deadline.
All presentations must be given IN-PERSON in Ottawa, Ontario.
Submission deadline: Sunday, August 30, 2026, 11:30pm ET.
Results will be sent by email in October.
All presenters are expected to register to attend the ALPM Conference in Ottawa and pay the associated registration fee.
The presentations should be 15-20 minutes long, followed by a 5-minute question and answer period. The planning committee may invite some presenters to deliver a 60-minute presentation, depending on the topic and the availability of time slots.
Presenters must give the presentation in person.
· No more than 2 presenters; presenters cannot be added or changed after the submission deadline.
· At least 25% of the presentation must be interactive.

Scoring Criteria
· Relevance and significance to clinical practice in advanced level palliative medicine (20%)
· Originality (15%)
· Evidence-based (15%)
· Quality of methodology or project activity (15%)
· Practical tools for application in diverse settings (clinical, educational, quality etc.) (15%)
· Interactivity (10%)
· Submission is well written/clearly communicated (10%)
• Presenters must give the presentation in-person.
• Presenters must be physicians and at least one must be a member of the CSPM. If both presenters are palliative care physicians, both must be members of the CSPM.
• Medical students, medical residents, and physicians are eligible to submit.
Presentations should adhere to the following:
• No more than 2 presenters; presenters cannot be added or changed after the submission deadline.
• 30 minutes long (including 10 min Q&A)
• At least 25% of the presentation must be interactive.
Complex case presentations should fit within the Canadian context and encourage lively discussion among participants. Submissions will be assessed based on the following criteria:
• Relevant to clinical practice in advanced level palliative medicine
• Interactive
• Practical
Authors are invited to submit and present abstracts showcasing work with clear potential to impact the discipline within one of the following broad areas. Accepted authors will be invited to give a 3-5 minute presentation followed by a discussion with the audience. The work can be in the development, implementation, piloting or dissemination phase in the following categories:
Adolescents & Young Adults
Clinical
Death & Dying
Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
Global Health
Grief & Bereavement
Pain & Symptom Management
Pediatrics
Professional development
Psychosocial
Abstracts should adhere to the following guidelines:
No more than 10 authors
A maximum total of three (3) submissions will be accepted by any one first author
300-word maximum (Excluding Title and Authors)
Abstracts must include:
Introduction: Two succinct learning objectives
Methods: A detailed description of the project or activity
Results/Impact
Discussion/Application
Refrain from using abbreviations - if needed, they should be defined upon first appearance
No tables or figures
Any actual or potential conflict of interest should be disclosed in the appropriate field (this information counts to the 300-word maximum)
The ALPM Scientific Planning Committee will assess and select posters on the basis of merit using the following criteria:
Innovative palliative medicine-related works, in the broad areas above
Relevance and significance to the topic of palliative medicine
Innovative/leading solutions to current issues in palliative medicine
Practical tools for application in diverse settings (clinical, educational, quality etc.)
Abstract is well written/clearly communicated
