1. Communicating Air Sensor Data

The Communicating Air Sensor Data sessions will focus on methods for effectively sharing the air quality data we collect. We welcome submissions focused on communication tactics sharing the process of developing/refining a strategy, designing/piloting/evaluating/tweaking communication pieces, using tools like surveys to gather feedback/data, and resources that can be adapted and reused by others. We encourage presenters to focus not only on the successful examples but also examples that were unsuccessful and lessons learned about why those efforts failed. Communication tactics of interest include, but are not limited to, dashboard designs, data visualizations, surveys, social media campaigns, action oriented messaging, training, and communication with policymakers.

2. Turning Data into Action

The Turning Data into Action sessions will focus on what is needed to go from producing air quality data to creating action and change in our communities. Actions can be big (e.g., setting a new policy) or small (e.g., convincing individuals to change their habits). We welcome submissions focused on positive outcomes/change and ask presenters to reflect on the key reproducible steps or “recipes” (e.g., effective messaging, key partnerships, lobbying strategies) that helped to produce these outcomes. Submissions for this track may be for short platform presentations, posters, or roundtable discussions. We welcome submissions for roundtable discussions where stakeholders with varied interests and roles (e.g., community members, advocates, policy makers) reflect on 1) the best practices involved in using air quality data to inspire action, 2) opportunities for action or policy change, 3) the policy development process, and/or 4) how science affects policy and vice versa.

3. Air Sensor Networks

The Air Sensor Networks sessions will explore the complete lifecycle of air sensor networks, from strategy and design to sustainable sensor network management. These sessions will discuss key topics, including setting of air sensor network objectives, approaches to siting and sensor installation, effective sensor network calibration methods and tools, end-of-life planning and management of sensor networks. These sessions also welcome submissions on sensor network maintenance and troubleshooting approaches, as well as the different approaches and methods for sensor data transmission, analysis, storage, and management. We welcome submissions that cover the technical, strategic, policy, and case study aspects of these topics.

4. Exposure and Health Studies

Air sensors have empowered communities, government staff, and researchers to better understand how air pollutants affect health-both outdoors and inside buildings. The Exposure and Health Studies sessions focus on how air sensors are changing our understanding of air pollution exposures and health impacts associated with air pollution and advancing our understanding and/or description of inequities in exposure and health outcomes. Presentations on indoor air quality and drivers of indoor air pollution exposure are welcome, as are examples of how sensor-based findings are being used to inform public health policies.

5. Application and Location Specific Studies

Air sensors have significant advantages over traditional reference-grade monitors such as portability, lower capital and operating costs, and low power consumption, and they can also be easier to use. These features enable the application of air sensors to a variety of unique situations, including routine wildland fire/smoke monitoring, indoor air quality, near-source sampling, and mobile measurements. The Application Specific Studies session will highlight case studies of such applications which should showcase new findings (unique to/facilitated by sensor use) and discuss challenges faced (and how they were resolved, if so).

6. Incident Air Monitoring

This session will explore the evolving role of air sensors in incident response and recovery during a range of air quality emergencies, including wildfires, wildland urban interface fires, chemical fires, industrial accidents, and natural disasters. Presentations will highlight how sensors complement other monitoring strategies and how they are deployed to monitor key pollutants—such as PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, VOCs, PAHs, and hazardous air toxics—in real time, supporting public health protection and emergency decision-making. The recent 2025 Los Angeles wildfires serve as a compelling example, illustrating how sensors were deployed during response and recovery, what they revealed about pollutant mixtures, and how their data complemented regulatory, mobile, and satellite-based measurements.

7. Contextualizing Air Quality Data

Air quality sensors provide unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of pollutant concentrations, yet really using these data increasingly requires integration with other data sources and knowledge. The Contextualizing Air Quality Data track will explore the intersection where sensor data has been fused, coupled, and integrated with other data, information, and knowledge to provide effective decision-making, policy development, and public health protection. We’re seeking talks on successful data fusion strategies, emerging analytical techniques, integrating community knowledge and insights, and demonstrations of how augmenting air sensor data drives new meaningful insights.

8. Sensor Certification and Standardization

Despite the widespread use of air quality sensors, their broader application and acceptance can be limited by disparate certification schemes and standards of sensor performance and data output format. These sessions discuss critical needs, actions, and proposals for standardizing validation and certification of air quality sensors. Topics include sensor performance targets, test methods, testing facilities, and certification programs. Presentations on open data, data sharing, data standards, data infrastructure, and data management systems are also highly encouraged.

9. Participatory Community-Based Air Quality Monitoring

Community scale monitoring programs have been rolled out in dozens of locations over recent years because of advances in air sensor technology. New sensor technologies have the potential to provide insight into air pollutant concentrations and disparities on neighborhood scales, ultimately yielding valuable information to improve public health. Understanding past challenges and successes is key to building the most effective community monitoring programs in the future. In this session we will explore existing community air monitoring systems with a focus on (1) how to meaningfully engage community members (2) how to collaborate across sectors and (3) how programs have used data to build communities’ self-advocacy. These sessions will prioritize talks that demonstrate effective programs that can be replicated and/or scaled. Submissions for this track may be short platform presentations, panels, or roundtable discussions. We encourage formats that enable participants from diverse sectors to discuss their successful partnerships.
