Welcome to the Bristol Poverty Institute's (BPI) online conference on Poverty and the Sustainable Development Goals: From the Local to the Global. Join us for three days of sessions bringing together people from a range of backgrounds, sectors, and different corners of the world to explore how poverty-related issues cut across the SDGs, and how we can work together to not only build back better but vitally to build back fairer.

We are pleased to announce that we have a professional scribe, Jorge, who will be illustrating the discussions taking place throughout the conference. We’ll be sharing updates from him a couple of times a day via our blog and also via Twitter.

The conference is broadly framed around how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can help to reduce poverty. These goals provide a blueprint to help all countries around the world to work together to achieve a better and more sustainable future, free from the scourge of poverty. Our fantastic interdisciplinary programme for this conference is framed around the interconnected SDGs and we are honoured to have a wide range of speakers and participants from all over the world bringing different theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary approaches to the analysis and eradication of poverty. The conference is structured around six broad thematic sessions aligning with the Bristol Poverty Institute’s areas of research focus. Each session cuts across at least two of the SDGs and, in some cases, many more. The programme is as follows:

6. Education (Thursday 29 April, afternoon)

Critical Perspectives on Education and Poverty Reduction in a Global Context

We will then have a plenary closing session (Thursday 29 April, afternoon) on the concept of ‘Building Back Fairer’, reflecting on the themes and discussions which have emerged through the course of the conference and exploring future directions for poverty alleviation research, policy and practice.
