About the Event

The BRaIN Program Symposium is a two-day event, scheduled for March 18-19, 2024. It is an excellent opportunity for senior high school, Cegep, and university students, as well as graduate students/trainees and researchers to learn about the latest developments in neuroscience research, and to gain insights into the latest research findings. It is a must-attend event for anyone interested in the field of neuroscience.

The first day of the symposium, March 18, will feature the Brain Bee Neuroscience Competition and lab tours for high school students. The Brain Bee competition is a neuroscience competition for high school students in grades 9 through Cegep-1. The lab tours will provide students with an opportunity to explore the research labs and gain insights into the latest research in neuroscience, including keynote address from Dr. Joe Schwarcz, Director of McGill University’s Office for Science and Society, who will discuss the relationship between the brain and nutrition.

The second day of the symposium, March 19, will be a research day where BRaIN trainees will present their research, either in oral or poster presentation format. BRaIN trainees will showcase their research findings and share their insights. Prizes will be awarded. The research day will also feature keynote speaker Dr. Gul Dolen, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Brain Science Institute of the Wendy Klag Center at the John Hopkins School of Medicine, who will be presenting her knowledge and analysis of the most recent advancements in neuroscience research. Selected abstracts will be chosen for oral presentations. The goal of this second day is to provide a unique opportunity to RI-MUHC trainees and to introduce the RI-MUHC community to their research project. Lunch will be provided only for presenters and their supervisor (PI or senior lab mentor).

Instructions for Oral and Poster Presentations

Detailed instructions for Oral and Poster Presenters are below. Please note that we may modify the length of orals and poster presentations based on the number of abstract submissions.

Oral Presentations:

Oral presentations will be held in person in the Cruess Amphitheatre. Each presenter will have 16 minutes for their slideshow presentation. Plan for 13 minutes for your presentation, which should cover an intro, hypothesis, methods, results, and conclusions. Leave 3 minutes for questions. Remember to make your presentation accessible to a broad audience and avoid jargon. Explain all clinical terms (e.g. remember to explain diseases and clinical procedures, if applicable). Explain all scientific methods (e.g. not everyone does flow cytometry, so remember to describe your experiments and methods clearly).

Poster Presentations:

Poster presentations will be held in the RI-MUHC Elspeth McConnell atrium. Pushpins will be provided and feel free to print individual slideshow slides should you not be able to print a large poster. The goal is not to read the poster, but to use this time to introduce yourself, your research, and your major outcomes in a succinct and clear manner. Once again, remember to have fun, avoid jargon, and make your presentation accessible to a broad audience! Recommended poster size: 45x45 inches.
