Society Prizes Guidelines
CNSF members have the opportunity to win valuable society prizes by submitting an 'Abstract' to the Congress as well as an 'Expanded Abstract' to the society prize competitions.
There are multiple first place prizes available to Junior Members or a Full Member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate. Each valued at up to $2500 (may include cash, complimentary registration, travel and accommodation to attend the CNSF Annual Congress).
Winners will be given a designated time to present their work at the CNSF Congress. Prize winners’ will be announced in the Neuro|News newsletter, in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences (CJNS), Congress Abstract Supplement and on the CNSF website.
$500 second place prizes and additional subsidiary prizes may be awarded.
Rules Governing all Society Prize Submissions
Authors are invited to submit an expanded abstract in conjunction with a regular abstract on or before February 2, 2026
Candidates must be a member in good standing with any one of the six Societies of the CNSF; as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate. See the specific membership requirements for each prize.
CSC Members must hold CSC Full membership but still be within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate or apply to become a CNS or CACN Junior member.
The same person may submit on different topics for the same prize.
Candidates need not be the sole author, but should have been primarily responsible for the work being submitted.
The same expanded abstract may not be submitted to more than one Society
The Congress Abstract submission review is independent from the Society Prize submission process.
Submission Requirements
Expanded Abstract
Up to, but not exceeding 3 pages, including any figures, tables, and necessary references.
Submissions longer than 3 pages of single-spaced typing will not be considered.
Format followed should consist of Background, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
The candidate should bear in mind, in the background section, that not all judges will be experts in the subject of the research paper.
Letter from Program Director
The letter must indicate that the submitted work was completed by a trainee, and was principally the work of the trainee (resident or fellow), during training.
Short Biography
Biography should indicate the stage of the candidate's residency or diploma program (if applicable), and list other work they have done.
Prizes Available
The Canadian Neurological Society (CNS) invites 'Expanded Abstract' submissions for its two prizes: the Francis McNaughton Memorial Prize for Clinical Research and the André Barbeau Memorial Prize for Basic Research.
These prizes were designed to encourage neurology trainees to undertake research projects. Prizes are awarded for the best expanded, structured abstract submitted, based on work done during neurology residency or in post-residency training.
Candidates must be a member in good standing with any one of the six Societies of the CNSF; as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate. CSC Members must hold CSC Full membership but still be within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate or apply to become a CNS or CACN Junior member.

The CNS with the support of a donation from the Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis Foundation is offering a $1,500 prize for the best paper submitted on Autoimmune Encephalitis.

A Prize Certificate
$1500 cash intended to defray costs related to attending the Congress
The Canadian Neurosurgical Society (CNSS), in co-operation with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, will award one prize in each of the Basic Neuroscience and Clinical Neuroscience categories for the best manuscripts submitted by a neurosurgical resident, in which he or she is the principal author.
Candidates must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Neurosurgical Society (CNSS) for at least one year prior to submission; as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate. (Become a Member | CNSS)

The Herbert Jasper Prize is awarded annually for the best expanded abstract in clinical or basic neurophysiology submitted by a resident or fellow in training.
Candidates must be a member in good standing with any one of the six Societies of the CNSF; as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate.

Additional Cash Awards
The CSCN is offering a $500 Cash Award for the best EEG Abstract and a $500 cash award for the best EMG Abstract submitted and approved to the CNSF Congress.
In 2025, there will also be six $1,000 Travel Awards - three for EEG and three for EMG.
Requirements for CSCN Cash Awards
Candidates must submit their basic abstract to the Congress, as instructed in the Call for Abstracts.
Select 'Clinical Neurophysiology (CSCN) as the primary category and either 'Epilepsy and EEG' or 'Neuromuscular Disease and EMG' as the Topic, secondary category.
Be a member in good standing with any one of the six Societies of the CNSF; as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate. (Become a Member | CNSF)
Winners will be notified after the abstract review process.
The CACN President’s Prize is awarded for the best expanded abstract in pediatric neuroscience submitted by a resident or fellow.
Candidates must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Child Neurology (CACN) as a Junior member or a Full member within two years of receiving their Royal College certificate.

The CSNR Society Prize is awarded for the best expanded abstract in diagnostic or interventional neuroradiology submitted by a resident or fellow.
