CSHM 2026 Conference | The History of Caring and Curing
Welcome to the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine Conference 2026!
The theme of our conference this year is Caring and Curing. We have twelve different sessions that will illuminate the rich historical contours of this theme plus innovative online content for participants. Don’t miss these regular and special events, all posted in Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and with bilingual captioning:
A LIVING HISTORY FORUM ABOUT GRASSY NARROWS featuring Community Elder and Advocate Judy Da Silva and Activist Scientist Donna Mergler on the fight for Indigenous health justice in the face of decades of mercury poisoning. This is a free event and open to the larger non-conference community. If you are here to join the Grassy Narrows Forum, register for the conference (no charge), and then join the Forum via the WEB-EX link on the Living History Forum page.
OUR AGM where we will have a chance to update you on what your executive has been doing in 2025-26 and to discuss important future-focused topics like upcoming annual conferences.
MENTORING SESSIONS for Emerging Scholars on Publishing and Careers beyond the Academy.
OUR BIANNUAL PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS given this year by Megan Davies, “Everyday Indigenous and settler health care in BC’s Peace River, 1900-1940.”
AN OPEN CONVERSATION about how we can retain members who move into jobs beyond the academic and diversify our community in other ways.
Use this site for fully up-to-date and comprehensive information about our 2026 Virtual Conference. Participants wishing to download a complete conference program can find one at the CSHM 2026 Conference webpage. Please note that this program will only be updated once a week.
Some people just drop in to online conferences, present their paper, and leave. Don’t do that. The CSHM is a community, and this conference is an important pilot project for us. Engage as fully as if we were meeting in person, take advantage of new options that we have created, and don’t forget to fill out our conference survey at the end!
We wish you a great conference.

A Dose of History: A Call for Submissions
A Dose of History is an AMS Healthcare-affiliated Substack that brings historical research into conversation with contemporary questions in health care. Through short, engaging essays, it shows how historical insight can clarify present-day practices and challenges
Conference papers are an ideal starting point: we invite presenters to adapt their work into short essays (approximately 800-1200 words) for a broad audience that includes healthcare practitioners, educators, and policy leaders.
This is an opportunity to extend the reach of your research and to participate in a growing conversation about the role of history in shaping healthcare futures.

Since its inception, the Toronto-based charity AMS Healthcare has been a generous and essential supporter of our Society’s activities, including its annual conference.
The CSHM/SCHM community acknowledges that we work, live, and learn on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations whose people hold important knowledges of health-making, medicine, food, and land use.
