CSHM 2027 Conference | Health in Action
Our 2027 Annual Meeting and Conference
Health in Action: The History of Activism, Advocacy, and the Politics of Care
The history of health and medicine is also a history of collective action. Patients, practitioners, families, communities, reformers, activists, institutions, and governments have mobilized around questions of health, illness, disability, care, and bodily autonomy. The theme of our conference this year is the history of health activism, recognizing that health activism has historically encompassed competing - and sometimes deeply contested - visions of medicine, rights, responsibility, and the public good.
As usual, we particularly encourage submissions from:
Graduate students, postdocs, and early career scholars
Established scholars developing novel methodological approaches and perspectives
In keeping with the longstanding practices of the society, we also welcome papers on all topics from different geographical areas and periods of the history of healthcare and medicine.

A Dose of History: A Call for Submissions
A Dose of History is an AMS Healthcare-affiliated Substack that brings historical research into conversation with contemporary questions in health care. Through short, engaging essays, it shows how historical insight can clarify present-day practices and challenges
Conference papers are an ideal starting point: we invite presenters to adapt their work into short essays (approximately 800-1200 words) for a broad audience that includes healthcare practitioners, educators, and policy leaders.
This is an opportunity to extend the reach of your research and to participate in a growing conversation about the role of history in shaping healthcare futures.

Since its inception, the Toronto-based charity AMS Healthcare has been a generous and essential supporter of our Society’s activities, including its annual conference.
The CSHM/SCHM community acknowledges that we work, live, and learn on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations whose people hold important knowledges of health-making, medicine, food, and land use.
