Scientific co-chairs
Dr. Aaron Drucker
University of Toronto
Dr. Drucker is a dermatologist and researcher focusing on epidemiology and evidenced-based treatment of skin disease. Through his research, Dr. Drucker aims to improve the lives of people with or at risk for inflammatory and neoplastic skin disease by evaluating risk factors, comorbidities, health service utilization and evidence-based treatments.
Dr. Drucker’s research is currently helping patients and clinicians navigate new treatments available for eczema (atopic dermatitis). This is an exciting time for individuals with eczema as there are many new treatments being studied to help those with more severe disease, where topical treatments are not enough. Dr. Drucker leads an international team conducting a living network meta-analysis of systemic immunomodulatory treatments for eczema. Through EczemaTherapies.com, this team is committed to providing the most up-to-date information on treatments for eczema to share with patients and clinicians.
Dr. Drucker is also focused on the safety of medications used in dermatology, particularly in older adults. He is currently studying potential adverse effects of topical and oral steroids used for people with eczema and is conducting a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded study to evaluate the safety of biologic medications for older adults with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Sampath Kumar Loganathan
McGill University
Dr. Sampath Loganathan received his Ph.D. from University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Joe Casey, Department of Biochemistry. In 2015, he joined the lab of Dr. Daniel Schramek as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, Sinai Health System, Toronto. He studied Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) using CRISPR based mouse models, ultra-sound guided lenti-viral injections, functional genomic tools and identified several novel tumor suppressors in HNSCC.
In his lab, he utilizes the in vivo CRISPR methodology in mouse models of HNSCC and investigate oncological mechanisms that drive the HNSCC with the ultimate goal of developing novel drug targets to treat this deadly cancer. In collaboration with other faculty members in Head and Neck Surgery department, Cancer Research Program, RI-MUHC and Goodman Cancer Research Centre, he focuses on:
1) Establishing HNSCC mouse models of novel tumor suppressors
2) Investigating drug targets from GPCR superfamily using in vivo CRISPR screening in HNSCC mouse models and
3) Utilizing patient-derived xenograft models to study drug targets and oncological mechanisms in HNSCC

His work on skin cancers has been recognized by the Canadian Dermatology Association and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Dr. Katrina Abuabara
University of California, San Francisco
Dr. Abuabara studies the impact of inflammatory skin disease on overall health and the role of the skin in the aging process. Her interdisciplinary scientific approach combines genomic, physiological, environmental, and psychosocial variables to understand patient outcomes over time. Her goal is to develop truly personalized interventions that address both the pathophysiological and sociocultural aspects of disease to improve the lives of patients.
