Developing Future Leaders in Academic Medicine

Welcome to the Developing Future Leaders in Academic Medicine course!

Designed for early-career NOSM U faculty (2-10 years), this program builds practical leadership skills through monthly sessions, dedicated mentorship from senior academic and hospital leaders, and a meaningful year-long project. Participants gain valuable connections, personalized guidance, and a certificate of completion while advancing their leadership journey.

Course Delivery

• Nine 2-hour virtual sessions between August 2026 - April 2027

• One in-person session at the end of the course (tentatively April 2027)

• Leadership Project - a longitudinal, practice-based component designed to help you apply program learning directly to your current work.

  Rather than creating new work, you will advance an existing initiative by approaching it more intentionally as a leader—integrating new perspectives, tools, and strategies gained through the program. This is a developmental project - not evaluative, and you will not be required to produce formal documentation or achieve pre-defined outcomes.

• Mentorship - Each participant will be paired with a mentor. This relationship is intended to support growth and exploration, not to supervise or evaluate.

Full Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Develop a sense of own personal leadership style including vision, values, personal strengths and areas for development.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of healthcare and medical education organizational systems including various opportunities for leadership within each.

3. Build expertise in management skills such as strategic goal setting, financial literacy, and project management.

4. Master communication skills that will enhance management of people, relationships and teams.

5. Develop an approach to constant evaluation of strategic change through a Quality Improvement (QI) lens.

• PCTA Members: $5,000.00
  ($3,500.00 NOAMA grant is applied to the full fee at registration)

• Non-PCTA Members: $5,000.00
  ($3500.00 FA grant is applied to the full fee at registration)

This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Office at NOSM University for up to 20.0 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits. 

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Office at NOSM University.
