First HaloFarMs Workshop "Soil Bioremediation and Water Desalination"

About the event

Soil conservation and sustainable management of water resources are at the heart of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. Treatment of unconventional waters including wastewater reclamation, brackish and seawater desalination would be great potentials to supply water in Mediterranean countries. Soil bioremediation using microorganisms and plants is an effective process to reduce salinity and remove pollutants from soils, transforming contaminated areas to productive soils.
Aiming at developing these nature based solutions (NBS) in the Mediterranean saline soils, CBBC and CERTE (Tunisia), DRC (Egypt), CSIC (Spain), UBO and INRAE (France), UNIPI (Italy) and CCMAR (Portugal) are collaborating within the PRIMA project “HaloFarMs” (2020-2023) entitled “Development and optimization of halophyte-based farming systems in salt-affected Mediterranean soils”.
In the framework of the workpackage 6 “Training, Dissemination and Communication”, the laboratory of Extremophile Plants (CBBC) and the laboratory of Desalination and Natural Water Treatment (CERTE) organized a first workshop on “Soil bioremediation and water desalination”. The main objective of the workshop is to share the existing knowledge and experiences in the Mediterranean area from the academia, the scientists, the private sector associations and governments, on the innovative approaches for soil remediation and water purification, focusing mainly on salinity.
In light of COVID-19 pandemic, this first HaloFarMs workshop will be held online from 25 to 26 November 2021

In two plenary sessions, keynote presentations will be given by invited leading experts in the field of soil remediation and water desalination.

Virtual poster sessions will be held for both themes: (i) Soil bioremediation and, (ii) water desalination.
