A Bit of Background

Hospitalization of a loved one in the ICU can be a very stressful experience for family members. Family often feel overwhelmed and powerless and find it challenging to understand information about their loved one’s health status and treatment plan. More than half of family members of ICU patients develop psychological symptoms (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress) and/or complicated grief, which can persist post-hospitalization. These symptoms can negatively impact a caregiver’s quality of life and ability to support an ICU survivor. At the same time, family members are essential and active partners with the ICU healthcare team. Family may play an important role in communication with the healthcare team, provide emotional and physical support, be involved in decision-making, and provide care directly to their loved ones. Family includes anyone with a biological, legal, or emotional relationship with the patient and whom the patient would like to be involved in their care.

Purpose of our Café Scientifique?

The purpose of this engaging event is to better understand how involving family members in their loved one’s care can be beneficial for patients, family, and the healthcare system. The program will include people with lived experience as family members of ICU patients describing their care experiences and healthcare professionals explaining how the scientific evidence shows that family participation in care can reduce psychological symptoms and improve quality of life. There will be a moderated panel discussion on family participation in care, including a discussion on practical ways to increase family participation in care. The audience will be invited to share their experiences and perspectives.
