QBIN Open Science Awards 2022

Description

Deadline to apply: April 8, 2022, 4pm EST

As part of our commitment to encouraging and supporting our members in engaging in Open Science practices, QBIN is launching a new competition for students and postdocs. Up to three awards of $2,000 each will be given to trainees who are actively working to advance Open Science in Quebec and/or internationally through their research practices and/or through outreach initiatives related to the field of bio-imaging. The award is open to Masters students, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows.

The prize can be awarded in recognition of a single project or of a series of contributions that demonstrate the individual’s commitment to making bio-imaging science transparent, reproducible, collaborative, and accessible to all. A non-exhaustive list of the types of Open Science activities that will be considered include;

  • the creation of or significant contributions to open access tools (e.g. software, code repositories) or open datasets that have had or are likely to have significant impact on bio-imaging research;
  • outreach events or initiatives that aim to disseminate bio-imaging science to the wider community;
  • knowledge translation and education activities;
  • initiatives that aim to increase communication with and involvement of participants and/or patients in the research process.

Eligibility

  • the applicant must be a student or postdoc member of QBIN (become a member);
  • the applicant’s primary supervisor must be a regular member or regular-clinician member of QBIN (refer to our membership directory or ask them to become a member);
  • the Open Science contributions must have taken place or have demonstrable impact in Quebec;
  • the Open Science contributions must be related to bio-imaging.

Evaluation criteria

The following criteria will be taken into consideration by the evaluation committee:

  • scope: Describe the focus and extent of your Open Science contributions;
  • impact: Describe the impact of your Open Science contributions on the community. Ongoing projects will be considered, but some evidence of impact is an asset. Where relevant and appropriate, metrics such as the number of downloads or citations of a software program, the number and kind of contributions to open tools, or the number and demographics of attendees at an event should be cited in the application;
  • originality: Describe how your Open Science contributions challenge the status quo;
  • collaboration and inclusivity: Describe how your Open Science contribution promotes collaboration and inclusivity, for example, with regards to reaching the wider community and/or sharing resources with under-funded/under-privileged researchers.

Applications will be accepted starting March 7, 2022. Applicants should be prepared to upload a single PDF document consisting of:

  1. Their FRQS CCV (not including detailed contributions).
  2. A 1,000-word description of their contributions to Open Science in Bio-Imaging. The description should clearly address the evaluation criteria listed above (scope, impact, originality, and collaboration and inclusivity).
