​ Prechtl General Movement Assessment (GMA)

Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center is proud to offer once again both the basic and advanced course to learn how to use the GMA. ​

The GMA has shown its merit for the prenatal and postnatal evaluation of the integrity of the nervous system. ​Compelling evidence is available that the assessment of General Movements (GMs) at a very early age is the best predictor for cerebral palsy. ​This method has become a valuable addition to the traditional neurological examination.

This course fulfills the standards specified by the GM Trust.

Objectives | Basic course​

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:​

1. Know the origin of spontaneous motor activity.​

2. Assess the normal and abnormal General Movements (GMs) from birth to 5 months.​

3. Apply the practical instructions for recording ans assessing GMs.​

4. Use the individual developmental trajectories based on the GMs.

Objectives | Advanced Course*​

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:​

1. Assess the General Movement's componants including speed, amplitude, intensity and rotations during the preterm and term age.

2. Assess fidgety movements and the concurrent motor repertoire (movements and postures) in three- to five-month-old infants.​

3. Adapt the use of the GMA to their clinical setting and for research.​

4. Add a quantitave optimality score to their evaluation.

*To attend the advanced course, successful completion of the basic course is required.
*The advanced course will be offered only if a minimum of 10 registrations is reached.
