The Global Surgery Lab is pleased to welcome you to the second edition of our Global Surgery Symposium: Surgical Education for Medical Deserts. Here, you will find more information about the objectives of the event, the speakers and the schedule.

This event was organized by a multidisciplinary committee comprised of nurses, education experts, administrators, students and surgeons. Our goal is to share challenges, opportunities and lessons learned in surgical education targeted to the areas of the world that are the lowest resourced. The expression "Medical Deserts" refers to functioning healthcare centers where there is no surgical capacity, due to a lack of trained workforce. We will explore surgical training programs in high income countries, in low income countries and within humanitarian organizations. Furthermore, we will introduce open-access tools, such as an international virtual training platform. The afternoon panel will consists of multidisciplinary providers sharing insight on surgical education across the world.

CPD credits will be provided upon completion of this activity.

Objectives

By attending this event, participants will:

Engage in dialogue to improve global surgical outcomes through education.
Compare and contrast various methods of teaching and learning in the global surgery context.
Formulate strategies to not only improve surgical outcomes globally but also within the North American context.
Reflect on the role of health care providers in improving health outcomes locally and globally.
