A Special Evening Exploring Our Fascination with Crystals

What is it about crystals that has captivated us for thousands of years? As part of IUCr2026, internationally recognized crystallographer Professor Juan Manuel García-Ruiz presented a special public lecture exploring our enduring connection to crystals—and what that fascination may reveal about the human mind.

Drawing upon science, history, archaeology, art, and some unexpected discoveries, Professor García-Ruiz invited scientists, students, crystal enthusiasts, and members of the Calgary community to consider why crystals have fascinated humanity for millennia. The lecture was followed by an audience Q&A chaired by Professor Louise N. Dawe of Wilfrid Laurier University.

While in Calgary for the Congress, Professor García-Ruiz also joined CBC’s Calgary Eyeopener to discuss the public lecture and his fascinating recent research examining why chimpanzees in Spain are so drawn to crystals.
