Le Dr Paul Fortin a obtenu son diplôme en médecine de l'Université Laval à Québec et est diplômé de l'Université McGill en rhumatologie. Il a ensuite fait une maîtrise et une formation de 3 ans en épidémiologie clinique en tant que chercheur postdoctoral à Harvard. Entre 1992 et 2000, il a été professeur de médecine à l'Université McGill et à l'Hôpital général de Montréal / Centre de santé et Institut de recherche de l'Université McGill.

En 2000, le Dr Fortin s'est joint au personnel du Toronto Western Division/University Health Network (UHN) à titre de clinicien-chercheur. En 2007, il est devenu professeur titulaire de médecine à l'Université de Toronto En août 2011, il est déménagé à Québec et est devenu professeur titulaire à l'Université Laval et clinicien-chercheur au Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec où il participe activement au développement de la recherche clinique en rhumatologie et d’un programme de recherche unique sur les maladies rhumatismales auto-immunes systémiques (MRAS).

Dès 2011, le Dr Fortin a implanté la biobanque et base de données sur les Maladies Rhumatismales Autoimmunes Systémiques (MRAS) qui regroupe des spécimens biologiques de patients souffrant de lupus et de polyarthrite rhumatoïd.

Le Dr Fortin a reçu le Prix du jeune chercheur de la Société canadienne de rhumatologie (SCR) en 1999, le prix Kirkland Scholar en 2008, et il a reçu le prestigieux Prix d'excellence pour la recherche de la Société d'arthrite du Canada (2007 - 2012). En 2010, il a reçu le Prix espoir de Lupus Ontario. En juillet 2012, il a reçu une Chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau 1 en maladies rhumatismales auto-immunes systémiques. En mai 2015, il a reçu le Prix Jeffrey Shiroky en Recherche pour ses réalisations en recherche clinique en rhumatologie et en février 2020, il a reçu le prix du Chercheur émérite de la Société canadienne de rhumatologie.

Dr. Paul Fortin obtained his medical degree from Université Laval in Quebec City and graduated from McGill University in rheumatology. Between 1992 and 2000, he was professor of medicine at McGill University and at the Montreal General Hospital / McGill University Health Center and Research Institute.

In 2000, Dr. Fortin joined the staff of the Toronto Western Division / University Health Network (UHN) as a Clinician Scientist. In 2007, he became a full professor of medicine at the University of Toronto In August 2011, he moved to Quebec and became a full professor at Laval University and clinician-researcher at the CRCHU de Quebec- Université Laval where he participates in developing clinical research in rheumatology and a unique research program on systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARS).

In 2011, Dr. Fortin set up the biobank and database on Systemic Rheumatic Autoimmune Diseases (MRAS) which brings together biological specimens from patients suffering from lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Fortin received the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association (CRA) in 1999, the Kirkland Scholar Award in 2008, and received the prestigious Award of Excellence for Research from the Arthritis Society of Canada. (2007 - 2012). In 2010, he received the Lupus Ontario Hope Award. In July 2012, he received a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases. In May 2015, he received the Jeffrey Shiroky Award in Research for his achievements in clinical research in rheumatology and in February 2020, he received the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
