Magnetic Moments at CLS
Join us at the Canadian Light Source for an enlightening day with magnets - how they are used to produce synchrotron light and how they connect to curriculum.
Who: High school & post-secondary Educators involved in science education
Where: In-person at the Canadian Light Source (with hybrid participation via Zoom)
To kick off the morning we’ll tour the facility, exploring the machine and beamline areas. This will be followed by informative presentations and discussions from a few experts at the CLS about using magnets to steer electrons and to produce photons. We will be touching on fields, waves, cooling, monitoring, and more!
In the afternoon, we’ll pivot to a workshop environment: digging into what we’ve learned, identifying curricular connections, and exploring how these can be incorporated into the classroom.
Confirmed Presenters

Chelsea-Lea Randall received her Master's Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2026 with research into measuring electron beam emittance using the quadrupole scan technique at the Canadian Light Source. She started with CLS as a Tour Guide in 2017 and has been there since, currently working as an Accelerator Physicist with the Beam Instrumentation group.

Cameron Baribeau is an accelerator physicist at the Canadian Light Source. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from the University of Saskatchewan in 2013 and has been at CLS his whole career. He has advanced his education through multiple CERN and U.S. Particle Accelerator Schools over the years. Cameron is a licensed Professional Engineer and a Project Management Professional. His work supports the effective operation of the CLS accelerator systems.

Rob is the Science Projects Manager at CLS. He has been part of program development and delivery since he joined CLS as a beamline scientist. While maybe not a 'teacher' he is certainly an educator! After completing his PhD in Surface Physics at the University of Liverpool he came to Canada by way of several other countries. Ask him how many languages he can understand! He has been involved in developing the Students on the Beamlines since the very beginning.
