Welcome to MOOT 37

REGISTRATION WILL OPEN JUNE 2026

Mark your calendars: MOOT heads back to the Big Smoke in 2026!

We are pleased to announce that the 37th MOOT NMR symposium will be held October 24-25, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario with an informal mixer on the evening of October 23rd ( . . . at the Storm Crow Manor - 'Toronto's geekiest bar').

The Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto has been chosen as the host site for this year’s conference with assistance from the University Health Network's Princess Margaret Cancer Research Centre and CSICOMP NMR Facility at the University of Toronto.

Our esteemed keynote speakers for this year include Professors Haribabu Arthanari, Lewis Kay, and Jeremy Gauthier. As with previous MOOT NMR symposia, there will be ample opportunities for students and post-doctoral fellows to present their research.

We eagerly anticipate your presence in October.

Best regards,

Darcy, Geneviève, and Simon

MOOT 37 Speakers

October 24th and 25th, 2026

Pr. Haribabu ArthanariHarvard University

Protein-Protein Interactions (PPIs) are the Holy Grail of therapeutic intervention, offering a plethora of unique structural landscapes as potential targets. The Arthanari Lab uses structure-guided approaches to characterize and validate PPIs in the context of disease models.  The lab utilizes a combination of techniques including NMR spectroscopy, NMR-based fragment and high throughput screening, and biophysical and cell-based assays to map hotspots in the interaction interface, to further understand the molecular mechanisms orchestrated by these interactions, and to identify disruptive inhibitors that may be developed into treatments for the related pathologies.

Pr. Lewis KayUniversity of Toronto

The Kay Lab is committed to the study of complex biological systems using novel NMR methodologies. Our diverse working environment fosters creativity and innovation, allowing us to push scientific boundaries.  The laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular determinants of phase separation using NMR spectroscopy. The overarching goal of the group is to illustrate the critical role of molecular dynamics in regulating biological processes.

Pr. Jeremy GauthierUniversity of Guelph

The Gauthier lab is interested in developing new analytical approaches to investigate anthropogenic compounds in the environment and living species. The instrument of choice for the Gauthier lab is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a uniquely powerful tool for the analysis of fluorinated and phosphorylated compounds, including per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). Key research themes include:

1. Development and application of NMR-based approaches to better understand the true extent of anthropogenic fluorine contamination in environmental and biological samples.

2. Investigation of the behaviour and fate of fluorine-containing compounds in plants, animals, humans, and the environment.

SickKids Land Acknowledgment

Land acknowledgement

"We would like to acknowledge the land on which SickKids operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, Toronto is home to Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. SickKids is committed to working toward new relationships that include First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and is grateful for the opportunity to share this land in caring for children and their families."
