Welcome to Science Atlantic - Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Conference 2026!

This conference is a gathering of experts and enthusiasts interested in the interplay of mathematics, statistics, and computing. We will explore current topics and discover new trends in the fields of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Our aim is to foster learning and discussion to create a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.

The conference will also feature the annual Computer Science Programming Competition and the Mathematics Problem Solving Competition.

We look forward to hearing your unique perspectives on these topics and connecting with you!

Plenary Speakers

* The Blundon lecture is named for Professor W.J. Blundon, the first head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, who was a prominent figure in mathematics and educational circles in Atlantic Canada for many years. The conference also hosts a problem-solving competition for teams of undergraduate students from Atlantic Canadian universities.

* The Sedgwick Lecture is named after Dr. Arthur Sedgwick, who was a professor of computer science at Dalhousie and former chair of the Computer Science Committee of the organization. He was also named to their Hall of Fame as an Outstanding Contributor.

* The Field lecture is named after Chris Field (Dalhousie Math & Stat Emeritus Professor). Chris is an eminent statistical researcher. He's received the Statistical Society of Canada's Gold Medal and the SSC Distinguished Service Award. He is an honorary member of the SSC and served as SSC President. Chris gave the inaugural Field lecture in 2005 at Acadia.

Blundon Lecture (Mathematics): Danielle CoxMount Saint Vincent University

Danielle Cox is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Mount Saint Vincent University. She is from Nova Scotia, completed her BSc (Honours) at Mount Saint Vincent University, MSc and Ph.D. at Dalhousie University. She studies graph polynomials and discrete-time processes on graphs.

She is the former director of Nova Scotia Math Circles and created the MSVU Science Circles outreach program. She has consistently held NSERC Discovery Grants, is co-chair of the Games and Graph Searching in Atlantic Canada (GGSAC) Collaborative Research Group, received the MSVU Early Career Research Award, MSVU Early Career Teaching Award and most recently the 2026 MSVU President's Award for Research Excellence.

Field Lecture (Statistics): Thierry DuscheneUniversité Laval

Thierry Duchesne is a professor of statistics at Université Laval. His research focuses on the development of statistical methodology for complex data, with interests spanning survival and longitudinal data analysis, stochastic processes, spatial statistics, and computational methods. His research is driven by collaborations across a wide range of scientific disciplines, including ecology, epidemiology, criminology, and the actuarial sciences. He develops statistical methods that help researchers answer real-world questions from complex data. He currently serves as Director of the Statistics Laboratory at the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM). He holds a BSc in Actuarial Science and an MSc in Mathematics (Actuarial Science) from Université Laval, and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Waterloo.

Sedgwick Lecture (CS): Daniel LemireUniversité du Quebec

Daniel Lemire is a professor of computer science at Université du Québec. His research and engineering work focus on high-performance computing, efficient data structures, and software performance optimization. He is the author of widely adopted open-source libraries. His contributions appear in major standard libraries and systems, including .NET, Rust, Go, Node.js, Google Chrome, and Safari. He ranks among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by citation impact according to the Stanford University / Elsevier ranking. He serves as editor of the journal Software: Practice and Experience (Wiley, founded in 1971) and has received the 2020 Université du Québec Award of Excellence in Research for his work on accelerating JSON parsing.
