Northern Constellations 2022
Thank you to those who joined us for Northern Constellations 2022
NOSM U’s Annual Faculty Development Conference
May 6th, 2022: 12:30 p.m. - 4:40 p.m. EST
May 7th, 2022: 8:30 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. EST
Our internationally renowned plenary speakers Dr. Saroo Sharda and Rebecca Thomas will provide opportunities to explore the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion as we advance social accountability at NOSM U through our educational and clinical activities.
Please select from a variety of breakout sessions to suit your learning needs. You will find sessions in the domains of effective teachers and learners; equity, diversity, and inclusion; leadership development, and career progression . These are the pillars of our new vision for faculty development at NOSM U. We are excited to continue to work to bring innovative faculty development programming for you.
As an overall goal of Northern Constellations is to provide opportunities for faculty to further develop scholarly activities and presentation skills, we would appreciate if you would provide the gift of feedback to your colleagues by completing session evaluations. In doing so we continue to grow our expertise and you will have an opportunity to win a book!
Throughout the conference take some time to network with colleagues from across Northern Ontario in one of our many Hallway Conversations. We look forward to seeing you Friday Evening when we recognize important contributions and achievements at the annual Faculty Awards and Celebration.

Rebecca Thomas BA, MA
Spoken Word Artist & Storyteller
Rebecca Thomas is an award-winning Mk’kmaw poet from Lennox Island First Nation. Rebecca is a spoken word artist, storyteller, and Halifax Poet Laureate from 2016 to 2018.
Rebecca begins her presentations with a simple plea to those listening: “For the next three minutes, you’re going to see the world through my eyes, and I ask that you empathize with us.” As Rebecca’s father is a residential school survivor, she draws on her personal experiences to create prose and poetry, which demands our attention. Rebecca’s spoken words are a powerful tool for educating about the racism and inequality that impact Indigenous People in Canada. “I don’t mince words. It’s not a performance – it’s me, my happiness, my frustration, my anger, and my sadness on full display.”
Rebecca’s first children’s book, I’m Finding My Talk, was a CBC Best Picture Book of 2019 and a Globe & Mail Top 100 Pick of 2019. Rebecca’s first adult collection of poetry, I place you into the fire, was a CBC Best Canadian Poetry pick of 2020. Her children’s book Swift Fox All Along was nominated for the 2021 Governor General’s Literary Award. The Writers’ Trust of Canada selected her as 2021 Writers’ Trust Rising Star.
Rebecca is a Halifax resident, Student Services Advisor at the Nova Scotia Community College, an avid runner, and hiker who is introducing herself to the land by learning to gather and fish.
