Northern Constellations 2023
Join us as we return in-person for Northern Constellations 2023, featuring internationally renown keynote speakers and story tellers - Danielle Daniel and Dr. James Maskalyk.
Choose from a wide range of workshop and educational innovation sessions to suit your learning needs. You will find sessions in the areas of effective teachers and learners; equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility; leadership development; and career progression. Participate in a series of research skill development sessions to assist your scholarly activities. Throughout the conference, take time to network and reconnect with colleagues from across Northern Ontario and beyond. As clinical and educational practice includes team collaboration, all health care professionals are welcome to attend.
Celebrate the extraordinary contributions of faculty, alumni, and learners at the first NOSM University Achievement Celebration on the evening of Friday May 5th. This will be followed by the PCTA Social Evening where you can continue your conversations.
Conference Learning Objectives:
- Describe examples of best practices within health care professional education, leadership, research, and/or scholarship.
- Identify resources to enhance your teaching and learning experiences.
- Incorporate personal or organizational strategies to support your wellness and resiliency.
- Develop networks to support your practice as a faculty member, educator, staff member or learner.
- Apply new skills to improve your teaching outcomes or expand your scholarly activities.
Keynote Speakers
Danielle Daniel
Danielle Daniel is an award-winning and bestselling author and illustrator—she writes books for children and adults. Her novels include Forever Birchwood, a middle grade novel set in her northern hometown and Daughters of the Deer, a historical fiction novel inspired by the lives of her ancestors— an Algonquin woman and a soldier/settler from France, and their first born daughter Jeanne. Her picture books include Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox, winner of the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award and a Best 100 title at the New York Public Library.
Danielle holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and lives on Manitoulin Island with her family.

James Maskalyk is a physician, author, and editor. He practices emergency medicine and trauma at St. Michael’s, Toronto’s inner-city hospital. His books include the international bestseller Sixth Months in Sudan and Life on the Ground Floor, winner of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize of Nonfiction.
James is a founding and strategic director of the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration supporting partners at Addis Ababa University to grow emergency medicine systems in Ethiopia and a member of Medecins Sans Frontieres, working as a journalist and physician.
James practices and teaches mindfulness and is passionate about its potential to encourage personal and social change.

Ernie Kwandibens
Whitesand First Nation
Ernie is a member of the Whitesand First Nation. He is a member of the NOSM U Council of Elders and Knowledge Carriers. Ernie works with his wife Charlotte, providing cultural teachings and traditional ceremonies such as sweat lodge ceremonies, pipe ceremonies, sunrise ceremonies, naming ceremonies, and young men’s teachings.
Charlotte Kwandibens
Waswanipi First Nation
Charlotte is a member of the Waswanipi First Nation, located in James Bay, Quebec. She is a member of the NOSM U Council of Elders and Knowledge Carriers. Charlotte works with her husband Ernie, providing traditional ceremonies and cultural teachings such as Healing Circles, Beading, Natural Health, Herbs, and Young Women teachings.

The impact of COVID-19 on the Hospitality and Travel Industries has been significant, resulting in a marked increase in costs. The Northern Constellations 2023 registration fees reflect the actual costs of an in-person conference and allow us to continue to provide a pre-eminent experience.
