The Palliative Care Education Program Planning Committee is pleased to announce the return of the palliative care conference!
This conference will provide strategies and resources for healthcare providers to develop a collaborative, interdisciplinary palliative care approach focused on non-Oncology Palliative Care in Northern, rural, and remote Ontario communities. Palliative Care scholarship and educational interventions frequently focus on Palliative Care for patients with cancer; this conference aims to bridge this gap and provide participants with the opportunity to explore Non-Oncology Palliative Care topics in further depth while providing participants with resources specific to Northern, rural, and remote Ontario contexts. Interactive seminars, breakout rooms, and poster sessions will focus on caring for patients with kidney, cardiovascular, respiratory, and liver diseases, developing interdisciplinary care networks, and other relevant topics that will equip providers with approaches and tools to provide high-quality care for their patients and patients’ families.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the scope, characteristics, and challenges of Non-Oncology Palliative Care in Northern, rural, and remote Ontario communities.
- Employ an interprofessional palliative care approach to address the needs of patients with non-oncological diagnoses and special patient populations.

Conference Speakers
Dr. Philippa Hawley
FRCPC, Clinical Professor, Dept. of Medicine, UBC
Dr. Hawley is a general internist by background, and has practiced palliative medicine since 1997. She is the Medical Director of BC Cancer’s Pain and Symptom Management/Palliative Care Program, and is Head of the UBC Division of Palliative Care. She is actively involved in palliative care research, currently awaiting the all-clear to start a study of the effects of medical cannabis oil extracts on symptoms in cancer patients, and teaching at all levels. She designed the “Bow Tie Model of 21st century Palliative Care” as a tool to explain how modern palliative care is most effective when integrated alongside disease management, and therefore requires recognition that survivorship is a possibility. She is the co-author of “Lap of Honour: a no fear guide to living well with dying”, for patients and their families living with serious illness.
Dr. Jo-Anne Clarke
BSc, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Jo-Anne Clarke is a Geriatrician who has been practicing in Northeaster Ontario since 2009. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology and Pharmacology, and obtained her M.D. from McMaster University in Hamilton. She went on to complete her Internal Medicine and Geriatric training at the University of Western Ontario in London. Currently, she is Medical Director for the North East Specialized Geriatric Centre, at Health Science North. Her full time clinical work includes outpatient practice (locally and regionally), inpatient consultation, telemedicine consultation, and providing support to the community paramedicine program. Dr. Clarke works alongside a team of professionals to provide regional specialized geriatric consultations to older adults in various communities across the Northeast. She is a member of the advisory committee of the Provincial Geriatric Leadership Office, and of the awards committee for the Canadian Geriatric Society. She supervises medical students and residents, has various research projects, and her free time is spent with her husband, her three boys, and their pug Bandit, in a continual quest for balance.
Caroline Duquette
Caroline Duquette’s passion for geriatrics and palliative care grew from her time working as a Registered Nurse in long term care and hospital settings. These experiences led her to pursue her Master’s in Nursing specializing in palliative care. She taught within several nursing programs before accepting a position as Clinical Nurse Specialist on the inpatient geriatric team at Health Sciences North. She remains active in research activities focusing on frailty, advance care planning and implementation science. She is now pursing her medical degree through NOSM with the goal of becoming a Care of the Elderly physician in Northeastern Ontario.

Cancellation Fees
The NOSM CEPD office reserves the right to cancel courses if required. Registrants will be notified as early as possible if this course is cancelled.
Registration fees for courses cancelled by NOSM CEPD office will be refunded; however NOSM CEPD will not be liable for any loss, damage or other expenses that such cancellation may cause.
In the event that a participant needs to withdraw from the program after registering, a cancellation administration fee will be applied. Please see below for cancellation deadlines and associated fees:
- Cancellation within five days of the conference receives zero refund
- Cancellation six days or more before the conference receives a refund of 75% of the paid fee

This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Office at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine for up to 7 Mainpro+ credit(s).
