Principles of Plastic Surgery (PoPS) Course for Primary Care and Emergency Physicians

One Day Course (6.5 hours) Available for In Person or Online Delivery

About the course

This course will focus on a basic head to toe approach with the intention of giving physicians and healthcare providers the ability to treat hand and soft tissue injuries in their clinics and smaller communities. Featuring short (15-20 min.) didactic presentations followed by dedicated group discussion (15-20 min.). Participant learning will also be supported by access to videos demonstrating the various suture techniques discussed throughout the course. In person participants will practice suturing techniques on provided materials.

Morning (3 hours)

• Hand Anatomy & Examination

• Laceration Hand, Bleeding Hand, Nerves

• Fractures of the Hand

• Extensor Tendons and Flexor Tendon Injury

• Carpal tunnel, Dupuytren’s contracture, Ganglion, Trigger finger, DeQuervains disease, Osteoarthritis

• Splints in Hand Surgery and Steroid injections in Hands

Afternoon: (3 hours)

• Skin anatomy, Skin Graft and Flaps-Ambulatory Care Protocol

• Skin in General, Debridement, Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections (NSTI’s)

• Diabetic foot ulcer

• Pressured Injury

• Burns

• Skin Cancers

• Suture Lab

Learning Objectives

• Perform basic assessments of hands and soft tissue.

• Develop a treatment plan for various hand and soft tissue conditions and scenarios

• Identify common missed warning signs and red flags when treating hands and soft tissue in the clinical environment.
