In 2017, NOSM conducted an external environmental scan as part of the Northern Ontario Clinical and Academic Integration Project. This led to the first Together We Are Stronger workshop in April 2017. The focus of this gathering was to examine academic leadership, accountability and support in the Northern Ontario Academic Health Sciences Centres to strengthen academic and clinical partnerships across the North.

To this end, there is a need to promote a sustainable framework for academic integration through strong collaboration agreements between NOSM U, the AHSCs and all regional partners. Effective collaboration will involve a focus on patient-centred care, a shared vision for education, and a commitment to our health profession learners as future care providers for Northern Ontario.

Establishing a strong pan-Northern commitment to our shared goals and values will be important before addressing the challenges around governance and resources.

As affiliation and collaboration agreements between NOSM U and the Northern AHSC’c are renewed, this is an ideal opportunity to develop an expanded and robust academic health sciences network. This will help move us forward and help us face the challenges and opportunities ahead. Across our institutions, work is underway to develop strategic plans to address these challenges. An aligned vision will allow us to achieve our social accountability mandate through seamlessly integrating teaching, research and clinical responsibilities within the AHSC’s and in our partner institutions across Northern Ontario.

On January 31^st, 2025, leaders from our regional partners, the AHSCs, and NOSM U will come together to establish the vision for the next 20 years. We hope to develop an inclusive and collaborative body that will serve as the basis for supporting our shared goals - the Academic Health Sciences Network of the North (AHSNN).
