Balancing Regulation and Innovation
AI & Future of Medicine: Balancing Regulation and Innovation is a cross-disciplinary symposium led by the UBC Data Science and Health (DASH) Research Excellence Cluster that brings together clinicians, researchers, students, Indigenous leaders, policymakers, patients, industry partners, and members of the public to explore one of the most pressing questions facing healthcare today: how can we harness the potential of artificial intelligence for improving health while ensuring it is implemented safely, ethically, and responsibly?
As AI rapidly moves from research and experimentation into clinical practice, healthcare systems are grappling with complex questions around regulation, governance, accountability, privacy, safety, bias, and public trust. While innovation continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, policy and governance frameworks are working to keep pace with new technologies and evolving models of care.
Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, participants will examine AI as a catalyst for change in medicine and engage in dialogue about the opportunities and challenges it presents for patients, providers, researchers, health systems, and society. The symposium will feature panel discussions on approaches to AI regulation and oversight, responsible implementation in healthcare, trust and transparency in AI-enabled decision-making, and the critical role of diverse perspectives in shaping the future of medicine.
A distinguishing feature of the event is its emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and practical skills development. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from medicine, health sciences, data science, computer science, law, public policy, and the social sciences to tackle real-world challenges related to AI governance, safety, implementation, and responsible innovation.
