WELCOME

We are pleased to host the virtual Microbiology Student Research Joint Symposium for Spring 2022! This event includes research conducted by undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Microbiology MBIO 4530 Research Project in Microbiology course (Fall 2021-Winter 2022), and by graduate students in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases. Faculty, staff, graduate, and undergraduate students from both departments are welcome to attend!

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

This 3-hour virtual Research Poster event provides the opportunity for participants to explore the research directions pursued in both departments. Enabled by the FourWaves virtual conference platform, attendees will be able to "move" throughout the posters presented by both undergraduate and graduate students. Briefly, an attendee will be able to scan through the listed posters, and once selected, can have the option of viewing the abstract, the PDF of the poster, and should the attendee have questions, request a video call with the presenter. Graduate students in the Department of Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases will have the opportunity to participate in the Graduate Student Research Poster competition (details below). More importantly, 4th-year undergraduate students participating in this event will have the unique opportunity to consider graduate studies in either department as a career option, whereas 2nd and 3rd year Microbiology/ Biochemistry/ Genetics undergraduate students may wish to consider MBIO 4530 as part of their Honours degree.

Be sure to register early for this exciting event! Registration is limited to 200 spots for presenters, evaluators, and attendees.

Poster size and formatting guidelines

Posters should be no larger than the maximum size of 4 feet x 4 feet (length x height). We strongly encourage posters to be within 4 feet x 3 feet/ 3 feet x 4 feet, as this is the most common poster dimension used at conferences. The poster must have the title of the study used on the abstract, a list of authors and their affiliations, the email address of the presenting student. We recommend that posters use section headings that organize and describe their research findings as follows: background/introduction, methods/approaches, results/main findings, discussion/summary/conclusions, and significance/impact. Other formatting options are at the discretion of the poster competitor.

Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Graduate Student Research Poster Competition

We welcome and strongly encourage departmental graduate students studying medical microbiology and infectious disease-related research to participate as part of this poster symposium event. Master's and Ph.D. level students with thesis-based research focused on medical microbiology and infectious disease topics are welcome to present and enter the competition for a chance to win a poster award of $100. It also offers students and registered attendees to learn more about the exciting research we conduct here at the University of Manitoba. Graduate students who enter the poster symposium competition will be automatically entered for competition judging. This is an opportunity for graduate students to highlight their research, have a chance to compete for poster awards, and get feedback on their posters prior to the start of national and international conferences. Students/ faculty members (adjuncts, cross appointees, etc) who do not wish to present a poster are welcome to register for the event as attendees, as registration space permits. Please register early as space is limited.

Eligibility: Master's and Ph.D. level students enrolled in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases graduate programs.

Competition Entry Deadline: Poster competitors must submit an abstract on or before Monday, April, 4, 2022. Posters do not need to be uploaded until the date of the event.
