Background

The 3rd World Congress of Marine Stations (WCMS 2026), convened by the World Association of Marine Stations (WAMS), brings the global marine-station community to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The Congress is organised around five themes — Oceans and Human Health; Ocean Innovation and Bioeconomies; Community, Education and Culture; Ocean Policy; and Marine Stations as Distributed Research Platforms — each combining contributed talks, a breakout session, and cross-cutting discussion on the future of marine stations as a connected, global research infrastructure.

As WAMS works to truly represent marine stations around the globe during this congress, we are offering travel and registration funding for participants, such as early career researchers, who may face economical constraints and larger travel costs. Your sponsorship can help us expand the reach of this event and unlock the untapped potential of stronger collaboration between marine stations.

Congress Audience

The estimated number of attendees for this in-person event is from 100 to 150 participants. The group is made up of scientists and students affiliated with marine stations from approximately 15 countries. We also expect participation from both public and private sectors, government officials, as well as other NGOs and groups involved in studying, understanding, and protecting our oceans.
