World Players Institute 2026: Where Research Takes the Field

WPI 2026 - Where Research Takes the Field: Informing decision making, bargaining, and practice in sport

Conference Overview

On 27-28 October 2026, the World Players Institute (WPI) will host its inaugural conference (WPI 2026) in partnership with Trinity College Dublin (TCD), bringing sport scholars and player associations together to facilitate the translation of research to impact both on and off the pitch.

As sport continues to grow—with longer seasons, ever-increasing revenues, expanding global reach— athletes remain underrepresented in decision-making processes. This power imbalance is most effectively addressed through collective bargaining, which depends on reliable data and rigorous research to strengthen athlete voice and ensure equitable outcomes.

While significant research on such key areas as economics, labour rights, and health and safety in sport already exists, WPI 2026 provides a unique platform for this evidence to create real impact. By fostering relationships between academia and player associations, this conference bridges the gap between theory and practice through co-created research and projects that directly support athlete welfare.

World Players is the global voice of organised athletes, representing more than 85,000 players through over 120 associations in 60+ countries. We unite athletes across sports and continents to protect their rights, improve working conditions, and strengthen their collective influence. Guided by the vision of a world of sport that is collectively bargained, we empower player associations, foster solidarity, and inspire change to create fairer, more sustainable sports industries for all.

The World Players Institute

The World Players Institute (WPI) is a space for collective learning and knowledge sharing to advance the rights of athletes for a better world of sport through education, training, and research. A diverse range of stakeholders are encouraged to participate to facilitate dialogue and a democratic approach to creating positive change.

The World Players Institute 2026 Conference will facilitate the development of a network of researchers and practitioners who can collaborate among themselves and with player associations to improve the working conditions of athletes around the world through building an evidence base for decision-making and policy development.

The conference invites researchers and experts across disciplines who aim for their research to have tangible impact on the lives of elite athletes. Alongside academics, player association members and leaders who desire to stay on the cutting edge of athlete-centred research are encouraged to attend. The conference is also open to current and former athletes, students, media representatives, sport governing bodies, and civil society organisations interested in collaborating to improve sport.
