Closing the Gap: Innovations in Mental Health

About the AGMHI

The Africa Global Mental Health Institute (AGMHI) is co-located within the Departments of Psychiatry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa and at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in Boston, USA.

The AGMHI embodies Dr. Chester M. Pierce's vision to serve the mental health needs of all people, everywhere. Its mission to advance mental health care in Africa and the diaspora across four key domains: research, training and education, clinical care delivery, and advocacy and policy. By fostering collaboration and partnerships among mental health stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, academia, and communities, the AGMHI aims to promote mental health equity and access to care across Africa and the diaspora.

About the AGMHI

AGMHI 2024 Conference - Closing the Gap: Innovations in Mental Health

The largest treatment gap for mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders to date exists in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite efforts to reduce the global burden of MNS disorders, significant barriers to the delivery of equitable mental health care remain. Barriers include a lack of research infrastructure to inform local and regional evidence bases, few in-country training opportunities for mental health professionals, and limited involvement of policymakers in the implementation of research findings.

Aligned with the domains of the Institute, the annual AGMHI conference brings together expert and emerging researchers, clinicians, educators, policymakers, and stakeholders from around the world to address these ongoing mental health challenges in Africa and the diaspora.

This year’s conference aims to foster collaborations and catalyze solutions to improve mental health outcomes through innovations in research, training & education, clinical care delivery, and advocacy & policy. The program will include inspiring talks from mental health professionals as well as those advocating for mental health every single day.
