Atlantic Universities Geoscience Conference 2024
Welcome
Hello and Welcome to the 74th Annual Atlantic University Geoscience Conference. The 2024 AUGC team and the Dawson Geology Society is excited to host you at Dalhousie on October 24-26.
The Atlantic Universities Geoscience Conference (AUGC) is the oldest geology conference in Canada, with the exception of the Geologic Association of Canada. Every year the AUGC hosts a conference where undergraduate students have the opportunity to present their current work, learn about local geology, meet members of the Atlantic geologic community and enjoy the company of like-minded students.

Sean Freeborne
Sean Freeborne is a professional geologist in Canada's mining industry, focusing on exploration for new mineral deposits in Atlantic Canada. He has worked on resource projects across Canada, specifically in gold, base metal, rare earth element (REE), and uranium exploration. He is currently employed at Signal Gold Inc., exploring the Goldboro Gold Project in Nova Scotia. He holds a BSc and MSc in Earth Sciences from StFX University with a focus of my past and present research being on the tectonic evolution of peri-Gondwanan terranes. He is currently the 1st Vice President of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, and a member of the PDAC, AGS, and CIM.
Alana Haysom
Alana Haysom, P.Geo. Alana graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Earth Sciences in 2007 and obtained an Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information Systems from NSCC’s Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) in 2016. Alana has worked predominantly in exploration and junior mining sectors exploring for a variety of commodities including gold, diamond and base metal all across Canada as well as Australia. However, Alana’s dream of living and working in Nova Scotia came true in 2018 when she moved home to work with Signal Gold where she now works as a Senior Geologist on the advanced stage Goldboro Gold Deposit on the Eastern Shore.
Scott Hazell
Scott Hazell is a Production Geologist-in-Training with Shell Canada Ltd., where he has worked since 2020, after graduating from UBC with a M.Sc. in Geological Sciences . His professional interests span the full lifecycle of hydrocarbon field development, from planning, delivery and operations of wells to abandonment and reclamation of legacy assets. In his free time, you can find Scott hiking in the Canadian Rockies with his partner, or volunteering as a mentor, adaptive snowsports instructor, and with the Canadian Energy Geoscience Association’s University Outreach committee.
Elahe Sirati
Elahe has been investigating the seismicity of Eastern Canada, particularly focusing on the Laurentian Fan area, using state-of-the-art Ocean Bottom Seismometers. Her research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the region’s seismic activity, which includes both tectonic earthquakes and biological signals such as Fin and Blue whale calls. By using advanced techniques to analyze seismic data, she is uncovering patterns in earthquake activity and addressing challenges such as timing inaccuracies in the instruments. Her work is expected to provide valuable insights into the geological processes that shape offshore Eastern Canada.
Elahe has a background in solid state physics and obtained her MSc in seismology from the University of Tehran, Iran. She joined the Geophysics Lab at Dalhousie University in 2022
