The theme of our annual gathering is:
Critical Dialogues : Identities, Differences, Silences, and Conflicts

2025 is a year of many important commemorations. Canada and the United States will certainly mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. For many, Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990 or the second referendum on Quebec’s independence in 1995 will be events worth remembering. Others may question the space allotted to commemorate important developments in Indigenous People’s history, such as the 1885 Northwest Rebellion and the Oka Crisis/Kanehsatà:ke Resistance of 1990. We may also want to mark important turning points in women’s history, and interrogate mainstream media’s tendency to privilege certain historical events while neglecting others, particularly those in the social, cultural, and familial realms. Many other sides of dominant narratives are the object of critical inquiries.

Among these celebrations and commemorations, the voices of some individuals and collectivities will be favoured over others. Differences will be strengthened or erased, silences will be maintained or broken, and unresolved and reignited conflicts will be the object of analyses and debates. The discipline of history will contribute to these conversations and will deepen our understanding of dominant and marginal narratives. The 2025 annual meeting will be the occasion to continue our critical dialogues on these themes and others, to keep innovating in our practices and to persist in the development of varied, nuanced, accurate and inclusive perspectives on the past.

We invite submissions that reflect on this broadly defined theme and any other proposal related to the research, teaching, or presentation of history. Bilingual and full-panel submissions (typically of 3 or 4 papers) are especially welcome.

Furthermore, the CHA meeting will overlap for at least half a day with the annual conference of Canadian Society for the History of Medicine. We are pleased to offer the members of both associations the opportunity to engage in stimulating joint sessions. People who are interested to be considered for CHA/CSHM joint session should indicate this in the description of their session or roundtable and must submit their proposal to both organizations, as they will be evaluated by members of both program committees. For these joint sessions, we are inviting proposals for joint sessions or roundtables only, not for individual papers. The CSHM will be posting their call for papers on their website https://cshm-schm.ca/ by the end of September with a November submission deadline.

· Number of submissions: Individuals can only submit one abstract for the CHA meeting (i.e. either an abstract for an individual paper or an abstract as part of a session proposal.)

· Session proposals should include the completed form (with the presenters’ names and contact information, as well as the name and contact of the session organizer, and a list of keywords.) Please also include the session’s title, paper titles, and brief abstracts (250 words) for each paper.

· Individual paper submissions should include the completed form (with the author’s name, contact information, and list of keywords) as well as a title and a brief abstract (250 words).

You do not have to be a member to submit a proposal. However, should your proposal be accepted, please note that all participants at the annual meeting must be members of the CHA.

Please register here before submitting your proposal.

Deadline to submit a proposal: October 15 2024.
