Dr. Bruce Kidd

Dr. Kidd is a renowned scholar, community activist and seasoned and respected academic leader. He was the founding dean of Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at University of Toronto. His research and teaching focuses on the history and political economy of Canadian and Olympic sport. He has authored or edited 14 books and hundreds of articles, papers, lectures, plays and film and radio scripts. Dr. Kidd has worked with numerous local, national, and international bodies to advance opportunities for physical activity and sport. He currently serves on the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Work Group on Women in Sport. Dr. Kidd has been a lifelong advocate of human rights and athletes’ rights. In 2004, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

In his recent book, ‘Educating the Body: why physical education is needed more than ever’, Kidd, along with co-authors M. Ann Hall and Patricia Vertinsky, present a history of physical education in Canada, shedding light on its major advocates, innovators, and institutions. It examines the realities of Canada’s classed, gendered, and racialized society and reveals the rich history of Indigenous teachings and practices that were marginalized and erased by the residential school system. Through remarkable stories of innovation, persistence, and achievement, Educating the Body provides a comprehensive history of physical education in Canada.

In his talk, Bruce will cover topics including promoting sport and physical activity for all; equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives; and disability and inclusive through adaptive physical activity.
