Interdisciplinary Data Fusion - Turning Pollution Data into Public Engagement & Policy Momentum (By: African Studies Centre Leiden & AirQo)
The workshop objectives is to foster cross-disciplinary discussions on the methodology of diverse air quality data integration to identify data gaps and needs that, if filled, would support more integrated, actionable research and policy engagement. Air quality research in Africa is advancing through the collection and integration of diverse data sources and methods, including satellite data, ground-level air quality measurements, citizen science, machine learning, and social science methodologies. But translating these into meaningful insights on health, socio-economic outcomes, and policy impact remains a challenge due to limited interdisciplinary exchanges. This interactive workshop brings together researchers who have or want to tackle interdisciplinary data fusion in air pollution studies. Through real-world case studies and small-group discussions, we will be sharing the experience with data fusion and explore what is working, what is missing, and what is needed to bridge the data-research-policy divide. Join us to learn, connect, and co-design better ways to measure and act on air pollution in Africa. Co-Chairs: Prof. Marleen Dekker, Dr. Agnieszka Kazimierczuk, Richard Sserunjogi Selected participants include: Prof. Francis Pope, University of Birmingham; Dr. Margaret Kedogo, University of Nairobi; Victor Nthusi, Health Effects Institute; Lambed Tatah, University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Joshua Musau, Egerton University and Nick Rahir KU Leuven/Ghent University. Please note that online participants won't be able to join the group discussion via audio, but we warmly invite you to share your ideas and insights on the available Miro board: https://bit.ly/44xKkeW
The Pan-African Network for Detection of Air Quality Initiative (Organiser: Wexsus, University of Gothenburg)
The Pan-African Network for Detection of Air quality (PANDA) will address gaps in African air-quality management, from high-quality measurements, including gases, to harmonized data available for modelling, policy etc. We will present, discuss, and refine the PANDA concept and welcome scientists, authorities, and others to contribute to making PANDA reality. AGENDA Introduction to PANDA Objectives of workshop Refined concept of PANDA Response to questions (to be addressed in groups) Committed task force Group work (questions to be addressed will be delivered on site) Reassembly and reports from groups Conclusion Team: Rose Alani1 , Kofi Amegah2 , Engineer Bainomugisha3 , Magdalena Eriksson4 , Michael Gatari5 , Johan Mellqvist6 , and Jan Pettersson7 1 University of Lagos, Nigeria; 2 University of Cape Coast, Ghana; 3 Makerere University, Uganda; 4 West Sweden Nexus for Sustainable Development, Sweden; 5 University of Nairobi, Kenya; 6 Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; 7 University of Gothenburg, Sweden Contact: johan.mellqvist@chalmers.se ; magdalena.eriksson@wexsus.se
