2024 CHHD Research Day

Welcome to the 9th Annual Child Health and Human Development Research Day -

Friday May 10th, 2024

Child Health and Human Development Research Day is organized to provide the program members and guests with information about the research spearheaded by our researchers, reinforce and initiate collaborations.

All CHHD members from the CTB and CORE are invited to participate in this event!

CHHD Trainees will be put forward as we want this event to be an opportunity for you to showcase your results to your peers, receive feedback on your work and most of all, improve your communication skills which is essential for any future researchers.

This Research Day will also allow everyone to familiarize themselves with research from our CHHD members and an Invited Speaker!

We are looking forward to seeing you at this year's CHHD research day!

Keynote Speaker

Beatrice Latal MD MPH

Co-Director, Child Development Center

University Children Hospital Zurich

Dr. Latal leads a large research group and is dedicated to teaching and faculty development. In her research, she investigates the developmental outcome of newborns and children at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. This includes children born very prematurely, children with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (“perinatal asphyxia”) and children with severe congenital heart disease.

Dr. Latal’s main research goals are to characterize the prevalence and severity of neurodevelopmental impairments in these children, to identify the potential risk factors for impairments and to study the mechanisms involved in the etiology of brain injury. Dr. Latal also examines the application of diagnostic tools such as amplitude integrated EEG, cerebral MRI and neurological examination for their potential usefulness as outcome predictors.

Keynote Speaker

CHHD Principal Investigator

Dr. Janusz Rak, MD PhD

Senior Scientist, CHHD

Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre

Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill university

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology, MUHC

Dr. Rak's research focuses on the role of the vasculature and blood in aggressiveness and progression of human cancers, especially in the brain, kidney and hematopoietic system. His laboratory studies how angiogenic and clotting factors influence the malignant disease and how to treat tumors more effectively using agents targeting vascular abnormalities. They described cancer-induced vascular processes that are distinct in adult and children. They also focus on cancer-specific interactions between tumor cells and vascular cells by exchange of unique cellular fragments known as extracellular vesicles or exosomes, some of which contain cancer causing genes and regulatory proteins and can serve as unprecedented sources of diagnostic information in cancer. They believe that interruption of intercellular connections represents a new frontier in therapy of human malignancies.
