Excursions
National Park Paklenica
Paklenica National Park is a stunning natural reserve located in the south part of Velebit mountain. Known for its dramatic canyons, steep cliffs, and dense forests, the park is a paradise for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers. Two main canyons, Velika and Mala Paklenica, cut through the limestone landscape, offer breathtaking views and challenging climbing routes. The Park is also home to diverse surface and underground wildlife.
Excursion details: Bus ride to the entrance of the Great Paklenica canyon. Hike through the canyon to the forest house Lugarnica or Mountain Hut Paklenica where food and refreshments are offered. The hike to Lugarnica takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from the parking area, covering 4 kilometers and gaining 275 meters in elevation. For those who wish to continue, the Mountain Hut is about 30 minutes further, adding 2 kilometers and another 100 meters of elevation.
Along the way, we’ll pass through Anića luka, nestled at the base of Anića kuk, one of Croatia’s most iconic rock-climbing locations. An optional visit to the Manita Peć cave will also be available. The cave is reached via a 30-minute uphill trail (300 meters elevation) from the canyon floor and can be explored in groups of up to 30 visitors. The cave is a type locality for six taxa, among which are two spiders: a leptonetid Cataleptoneta lingulata Wang & Li, 2010, and an agelenid Histopona egonpretneri Deeleman-Reinhold, 1983. On our return, there will be an opportunity to visit the Visitor Center "Underground Secrets of Paklenica", located in Cold War-era tunnels—nicknamed the "Bunkers"—built by the Yugoslav Army between 1950 and 1953.
The full program will last between 7 to 8 hours. We'll have an early start, and while there is drinking water available along the trail, be prepared for warm weather and bring appropriate gear for a day of hiking. Excursions will be organized by a licensed tourist agency.
