Welcome to the EdVentures of Summer Residency 2025!
The annual Summer Residency Week is a crucial component of the online Leadership in Schooling Ed.D. program at UMass Lowell's School of Education. This event offers several key benefits and activities:
1. Face-to-Face Interaction: Doctoral students get the opportunity to meet their cohort members in person, fostering camaraderie and building a strong learning community.
2. Program-Specific Activities: Each cohort engages in activities tailored to their year in the program:
- First-year students work on concept papers and observe senior students' activities
- Second-year students take oral qualifying exams
- Third-year students present dissertation proposals
3. Professional Development: The residency includes panel discussions on important topics like identity and equity in education.
4. Networking Opportunities: Students can connect with peers, faculty, and alumni, creating valuable professional relationships.
5. Inspiration and Motivation: Observing the progress of senior cohorts helps inspire newer students to persevere in their academic journey.
6. Cultural Experiences: The program includes tours of the city and social events, providing a well-rounded experience.
7. Supportive Environment: Faculty members offer emotional support and emphasize the importance of leadership, education, and social justice.
The Summer Residency Week takes place at the renovated Coburn Hall, providing a blend of historic significance and modern facilities. This intensive week plays a vital role in reinforcing the program's focus on leadership, STEM education, and principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Residency Attendance and Participation
Summer Doctoral Residency Attendance and Participation Policy
The Summer Doctoral Residency is a required component of the EdD Program and is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and immersive experience that supports their development as scholar-practitioners. The Residency includes presentations, workshops, community-building activities, and opportunities for collaboration within and across cohorts—all of which are integral to student success in the program.
All EdD students are required to attend the full Residency, scheduled for July 7th-10th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and July 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Attendance on all days is mandatory.
In addition to physical attendance, students are expected to actively participate throughout each day of the residency. This includes full engagement in workshops, group discussions, cohort activities, and all scheduled programming. Participation is critical to achieving the goals of the residency, which include deepening content knowledge, building professional networks, and fostering a collaborative and supportive doctoral learning environment.
Failure to attend and participate in the full residency may impact a student’s standing in the program and must be approved in advance by the EdD Program Coordinator under extenuating circumstances.
