Forms of submission

Four different submission formats are available. Once your submission has been accepted, we will provide you with the details regarding the presentation at ERS 2024.

Full paper:

Reports on completed research that is intended for publication in an academic journal.

Conference paper:

Reports on research that is close to completion.

Research ideas:

Outlines a forward-thinking research idea that the presenters have started to engage with.

Discussion forum:

Outlines a topic of broad interest that is intended to be discussed in a workshop-type set-up.

Full paper

Full papers submitted to the seminar will be reviewed for potential publication in a globally recognized academic journal and will be subjected to a double-blind review process by a board of international reviewers.

The authors can self-select between the Journal of Business Logistics (JBL) and the International Journal of Logistics Management (IJLM) depending on personal preferences and the fit of the manuscript to the mission of the respective journal.

The process for JBL will be managed by one of its European Editors, Professors Durach, de Leeuw, Wallenburg. The process for IJLM will be managed by its Editor, Professor Gammelgaard.

Authors of full papers accepted for ERS will be asked to present the paper at the European Research Seminar. Presentation is a precondition for possible publication in either of the two journals.

Full papers need to be submitted to ERS and via the online submission platform of JBL (link) or IJLM (link). For JBL, make sure to tick "Special Issue Article" on the first submission page. For both journals, please also make sure to specify in your cover letter that the paper is intended for ERS 2024. In addition, you need to register the full paper via the ERS webpage (Submission) in order for us to make sure that the paper is actually allocated to ERS by the journals.

Conference paper

Conference papers present research that is closer to completion and for which the authors seek detailed feedback both before and at the conference. For these papers, feedback will be provided by two individuals: a European Editor or Senior Editor from JBL and a regular JBL reviewer.

To facilitate this, authors will be asked to submit their papers via the submission platform of JBL. However, this does not obligate the authors to submit their revised work to JBL after receiving feedback from the review team and conference participants. They may still decide to submit to another journal. Nonetheless, all papers that fall under the scope of JBL and demonstrate high quality will receive an invitation to resubmit their research to JBL after the conference. If the authors accept this invitation, they are guaranteed that the same two reviewers who reviewed the paper before ERS will also be part of the subsequent JBL review team. This ensures consistency and prevents the authors from being confronted with entirely different reviewers at a later stage.

Conference papers should be written according to the JBL style guide/template.

Research idea

Research ideas outline forward-thinking research ideas that the presenters have started to engage with. The objective is to receive feedback on novel perspectives in the early and mid stages of idea development and refinement (for example, before data collection) to create high-impact research. Research ideas are submitted via a 2-3 page outline.

Discussion forum

To facilitate open interaction and discussion, a special feature of the ERS is 60 to 90 minutes time slots dedicated to discussing topics of high relevance.

The aim of these sessions is to focus on topics that are of high relevance for academia and/or the future development of the discipline; these topics should address new academic areas and/or exploit new methods. The content could relate to the future of a current research stream, a new research call, a new hypothesis, and/or an innovative research or teaching approach, etc. In the traditional conference format, these forums would take the form of a workshop, interactive debate, mini-presentations, or any other format that helps to encourage and facilitate interaction and discussions among the participants.

We invite scholars to submit a discussion proposal that includes but is not limited to the following:

Topic description focusing on the way it brings innovative thinking to the discipline (e.g., perspectives, areas, and/or methods)

Large audience appeal, i.e., a topic of broad interest in the area of logistics/SCM

Based on unique insights or data as well as references to papers (including work in progress) or other related material that relates to the topic

A suggestion of a digital format for the session (i.e., your ideas on how you could set up the discussion in the virtual space)

Learning outcomes/insights for the discussion participants

The discussion topic proposal should be a brief description of the above. You are encouraged to coordinate the contents of a discussion topic proposal with other researchers and come up with a joint proposal that includes digital interaction from different scholars. These proposals will be evaluated by the ERS scientific board with the objective of selecting topics and formats that will be highly interesting and valuable for the participants of ERS.
