  • 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM - Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Session
    Chair: Dr. Yanet Valdez

The past year has seen decades of societal inequities surface and demand a response: Picture a Scientist, the gender gap in pay and representation, Black Lives Matter protests, COVID-19 exposing health inequities, racist attacks on Indigenous and Asian Canadians. Science is not removed from society and our funding agencies expect our work to address the needs of Canadians. How do racial and other inequities manifest in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM)? What practices can we adopt to improve outcomes for researchers from under-represented groups, and ensure diverse leadership at all levels of STEM? Our speakers have established national and international prominence addressing these issues.

Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, Yale University, CT, USA

  • 1:00 - 2:30 PM - EDI Active Learning Session

Exercise your anti-racism muscles with an interactive workshop that challenges you to recognize and react to racial inequities in STEM. This facilitated session will allow for everyone from novices to those seasoned in anti-racism to explore and discuss how racism makes itself known in the health sciences. Laptops are the suggested device for this workshop as we will be using Jamboards in break out sessions. In a pinch, you can use a combination of tablets and smartphones to have access to two screens. We hope to see you there!

Social

2:30 - 4:00 PM - Social

Join us for an informative yet hilarious event with a special appearance from science communicator and @lab_shenanigans creator, Darrion Nguyen. He will walk us through communicating science in the age of social media and how to embrace our most memorable #EpicLabFails - this is an event trainees won’t want to miss!

Everyone else is invited to grab a drink and join us for a virtual social event on the Networking platform Toucan: invitation can be found on the Schedule page! Our Trainees prepared two versions of cocktails recipes (alcohol and non alcohol drinks), download, prepare before you join either social events!
