2:30-3:20 PM AVELA: Actualizing Student Leadership

Underrepresented minority (URM) students pursuing STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) majors are often under-prepared to juggle the financial stress, steep learning curve, rigorous coursework, and competitive nature of UW. Come learn from AVELA founders Kyle and Vicente about why and how they created AVELA: an organization that helps address all of these issues. AVELA leverages near-peer mentorship to pair undergraduate URM students with experienced/graduate URM mentors so they can learn research-based or social-good driven K-12 outreach lessons. Undergraduate students are then compensated to go out and represent their own URM communities in teaching the STEM lessons they created and/or were trained to teach. Come join this information session to get involved!

2:30-3:20 PM Introduction to Undergraduate Research

Learn from the UW Office of Undergraduate Research about how you get involved with research, what research can look like (it doesn't have to be lab or field work!), and why you might want to do research as an undergraduate. It can be intimidating to start searching for and applying to research opportunities, but this workshop will break it down where to start, who to talk to, and what steps you can take either at the UW or at your home institution to try to find research opportunities that are a good match for you, your skills, and your goals. Regardless of experience, everyone who has an interest in conducting research can get involved - so come to this session and see if undergraduate research is for you!

3-4:20 PM Making Research Mentorships Work for You

Despite their importance in shaping mentees' experiences, careers, etc., good research mentors (be it faculty, postdocs, or graduate students) are not a given. Often there is an expectation that the mentor directs the goals and training plans, however this can lead to unclear expectations and negative experiences for the student mentee. In this workshop, we will cover strategies you as a mentee can take to be more active participants in your mentor relationships, and get the most out of your mentorship!
