TRAUMA-SENSITIVE EMPOWERING INTERVENTIONS

Health Coaching, Motivational Interviewing & Somatic Experiencing

This workshop was developed in response to the demand from BC communities to better support patient empowerment and thereby improve provider job satisfaction and meaning in work. It teaches efficient, effective tools to foster healing and participation in patients living with chronic pain, addictions, mood disorders, and/or disease. It is especially useful for enabling renegotiation from trauma, and integrates features of health coaching, motivational interviewing, somatic experiencing, cognitive behavioural therapy and positive psychology. This workshop is suitable for both family physicians & specialists. The tools can be applied in both office and hospital settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Recognize the fundamental spirit of Motivational Interviewing, Health Coaching, Positive Psychology, & Somatic Experiencing
Implement the principles, skills and tools that promote patient self-management in patients dealing with chronic conditions (including diseases, moods, pain, addictions & trauma)
Comprehend the basic science and physiology behind using these approaches.

LEARNING METHODS:

In order to optimize experiential learning, the following methods are employed:

Brief didactic segments overviewing the 6 main tools
Discussion of case examples and live demonstrations of tools in action
Small group practice opportunities with peer feedback
