Plenary - Panel | Emerging issues and controversies in Medical Assistance in Dying: international perspectives
Marie-Ève Bouthillier, Eduard Verhagen, Julieta Moreno Molina Eliana Close, Andrea Frolic Moderator : Marie-Eve Bouthillier As a result of the traction gained by dying with dignity movements and public debates over the last few decades, a self-chosen medically assisted death has become a legal option in several jurisdictions across the world. MAiD legislation varies significantly from one jurisdiction to another, in ways that reflect local realities and their history with the practice itself. Because of these local differences, countries where medically assisted death is legal face diverse emerging challenges. This panel will highlight the perspectives of international experts in MAiD who will present the emerging issues faced by healthcare providers in the context of MAiD provision within their respective countries. Special attention will be given to the steady increase of MAiD requests in Quebec and the Netherlands, issues with respect to MAiD requests motivated by unmet psychosocial needs and the broadening of MAiD eligibility criteria to new populations in various jurisdictions in the world. The objective of the panel is to engage the experts’ diverse experiences with MAiD to bring to light lessons learned and innovative ways to address emerging issues in MAiD care. More importantly, the panel hopes to engage its members and participants in a broader reflection on the values that should underpin ethically sound MAiD.
