IEBS 2023

Dear colleagues and friends,

We look forward to welcoming you to IEBS2023 - "XVI International Estuarine Biogeochemistry Symposium" to be held in Šibenik, Croatia, 23-26 May 2023.

The theme of the XVI IEBS symposium is "Estuarine Biogeochemistry in a World of Global Change and Emerging Contaminants".

For a long time we have been confronted with the consequences of various changes in the coastal environment caused by (un)predictable climate change, intensive activities at the land-sea boundary, major natural and human-induced changes. Coastal ecosystems are in transition from natural to human-induced conditions - the Anthropocene. A wide range of contaminants, including conventional ones such as metals, radionuclides, organic micropollutants and nutrients, as well as various (emerging) inorganic and organic compounds with unknown biogeochemistry, are increasingly being introduced into coastal environments through continental, atmospheric and submarine pathways.

Detecting the presence of such contaminants, identifying their sources, determining their spatial and temporal distribution, their estuarine and coastal biogeochemistry and their ecological impacts are of utmost importance. We welcome studies that address the sources, behaviour and fate of metals, nutrients, organic matter, historical and emerging contaminants.

The symposium is organised by the Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb (RBI), Croatia's leading scientific institute in natural and biomedical sciences as well as marine and environmental research.

We look forward to welcoming you in Šibenik next May.
