Science Atlantic - Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Conference 2024

Welcome to Science Atlantic - Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Conference 2024!

This conference is a gathering of experts and enthusiasts interested in the interplay of mathematics and computing. We will explore current topics and discover new trends in the fields of mathematics and computer science. Our aim is to foster learning and discussion to create a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.

We look forward to hearing your unique perspectives on these topics and connecting with you!

Plenary Speakers

* The Blundon lecture is named for Professor W.J. Blundon, the first head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, who was a prominent figure in mathematics and educational circles in Atlantic Canada for many years. The conference also hosts a problem-solving competition for teams of undergraduate students from Atlantic Canadian universities.

* The Sedgewick Lecture is named after Dr. Sedgwick, a retired professor of computer science at Dalhousie and former chair of the Computer Science Committee of the organization. He was also named to their Hall of Fame as an Outstanding Contributor.

* The Field lecture is named after Chris Field (Dalhousie Math & Stat Emeritus Professor). Chris is an eminent statistical researcher. He's received the Statistical Society of Canada's Gold Medal and the SSC Distinguished Service Award. He is an honorary member of the SSC and served as SSC President. Chris gave the inaugural Field lecture in 2005 at Acadia.

  • Sedgewick Lecture (CS): Alexis Morris

    Sedgewick Lecture (CS): Alexis Morris

    OCAD University

Dr. Morris is an Associate Professor in the Digital Futures program at OCAD University, and the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Internet of Things. He is the director of the Adaptive Context Environments (ACE) Lab, and is a specialist in the overlapping research domain of software engineering for adaptive systems based on the incorporation of fuzzy human-factors in socio-technical systems and conducts core research on adaptive interfaces and collaborative approaches to context awareness through mixed reality, for a host of domains, including the Internet of Things. His work engages a cross-section of approaches in artificial intelligence (i.e., soft-computing via neural networks and fuzzy logic), virtual and augmented reality, passive brain-computer interfaces, adaptive risk management, multi-agent systems modelling, organizational culture simulations, and pervasive technologies. He also aims to impart insight into the broad impact of rapid technological advances on society, through lecturing and teaching roles that engage and inspire students.

Having a diverse research agenda, he aims to organize and enhance human-machine synergy through initiatives to further the effective adoption of artificial intelligence as a support agent for practical and long-term uses. He is also an avid futurist and techno-optimist envisioning a world where computer science mastery enables humanity to tackle the multi-faceted and important challenges facing society.

  • Field Lecture (Statistics): Tessema Astatkie

    Field Lecture (Statistics): Tessema Astatkie

    Dalhousie University

Tessema Astatkie is a professor of statistics at the Faculty of Agriculture of Dalhousie University, Canada. He is also a Professional Statistician accredited by the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). Tessema received his Ph.D. in Statistics from Queen's University, Canada. He conducts independent and collaborative research in several areas of statistics. Tessema collaborated with several researchers in 29 countries who specialize in agriculture, food processing, human nutrition, and post-harvest management. Over 225 papers from these collaborations were published in over 95 different reputable journals.

  • Blundon Lecture (Mathematics): Louigi Addario-Berry

    Blundon Lecture (Mathematics): Louigi Addario-Berry

    McGill University

Louigi Addario-Berry is a professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He is an expert in probability theory, stochastic processes and combinatorics. Among other awards, in 2016, Professor Addario-Berry was awarded the Coexter-James Prize from the Canadian Mathematical Society and, in 2021, was a Simons Fellow in Mathematics. As service to the mathematical community, with Eyal Goren, Professor Addario-Berry served as the editor-in-chief of the Candian Journal of Mathematics. He has also edited the Electronic Journal of Probability and the Electronic Communications in Probability. Professor Addario-Berry has held several grants from NSERC and FQRNT and is very active with supervision. Further, he has served as Deputy Director of the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques (CRM, Montreal) and currently directs the CRM Probability Lab. More information about Professor Addario-Berry can be found on his webpage: http://problab.ca/louigi/.
