Tips for presenters

Tips for Presenters

Sentinel North is glad to count you as one of the speakers for its 2025 Sentinel North Scientific Meeting. This event is a great opportunity for enriching discussions and collaborations in an interdisciplinary context that will lead to an improved understanding of the northern environment and its impact on human beings and their health. The goal of this webpage is to give speakers tips to maximize the impact of their lecture. Here are three questions to consider before preparing a presentation.

Who is my audience?

  • Each speaker will have to face a challenge at Sentinel North Scientific Meeting: to popularize in front of a multidisciplinary audience. Therefore, it is important to speak in such a way to be understood by everyone.

  • If you have to use technical terms, make sure to define them at their first mention. A good rule of thumb is that the number of slides with technical notions should not exceed one quarter of the presentation.

  • Start your presentation by contextualizing your subject as part of Sentinel North.

What is the main message I want my audience to understand and remember?

  • The main message can be expressed with a powerful summary sentence which can be remembered by the audience long after the presentation.

  • Limit the presentation to a few key elements to support the main message.

  • Make sure to summarize the message you wish to convey in the last slide.

How can I get my audience’s attention?

  • Take a moment to introduce your research subject, and to share your passion and motivation on the subject.

  • Use analogies, humour and anecdotes/fun facts.

  • Prioritize photos, graphics, videos and key words over long texts.

Technical details for oral and blitz presentations

  • The format to be used is 16:9, in PowerPoint or PDF.

  • A standard font is recommended (Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, etc.) and the ideal size for comfortable reading is 24 to 32.

  • All videos must be embedded directly into your media.

  • The meeting is bilingual. Your presentation can be in English or French. No simultaneous interpretation will be provided. If you are presenting in French, it is strongly suggested that your visual support be in English.

  • Upon arrival at the Convention Centre, we invite you to drop off your presentation at the reception desk for downloading.

  • Oral presentations last 10 minutes, followed by 3 minutes of questions. Blitz presentations are 3 minutes, without questions.

  • For blitz presentations:

    • A maximum of three slides without animation is suggested.

    • Blitzes should not exceed 3 minutes, and are not followed by questions.

    • Take the opportunity to engage the audience and invite them to view your poster.

  • The exact time of your presentation will be communicated to you in April.

Technical details for posters

  • Posters must be no larger than 114 x 101 cm / 45 x 40 inches (width by height).

  • Posters must be installed between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, and removed between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. Velcro will be available on site for poster installation.
