2021 Science Atlantic Environment Conference


WHAT?
Science Atlantic Environment Conference (SAEC 2021) is an opportunity to present your research, learn about your peers’ research, and interact as well as network with students and professors in the Atlantic Provinces. All students and faculty with an interest in the environmental science can attend.

THIS YEAR’S CONFERENCE
This year’s conference is co-hosted by Cape Breton University and the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton). It will be fully virtual, and will have talks by students as well as poster sessions. There will be social and networking activities, a plenary speaker, and prizes for student work.

WHEN AND WHERE?
The conference will run on Saturday March 13th 2021, via Microsoft Teams from approximately 8:30am to 4:30pm, with social and other activities in the late afternoon to early evening. There will be a presenter orientation and technology check on March 12th. ALL presenters (oral and poster) have to attend the orientation.

NOTE: All registrants will be added to the MS Teams using the email submitted during the registration process - please check you email/junk mail on March 11th to gain access to the Team we will be using for the conference. Once you have access to the Team you should have full functionality to join any of the channels throughout the day of the conference through the MS Teams app or browser.


REGISTRATION ($20) will be open from February 8th to March 8th, 2021.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION will be open from February 8th to February 28th 2021. Please register when you submit your abstract. All the requirements for abstracts are listed on the submission page. Abstracts, posters, and presentations will be accepted in French or English.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

  • Oral presentation will be done live through MSTeams. Presentations will be 15 minutes in length with 5 minutes for questions.
  • Students will be able to share their PPT presentation through the MSTeams platform.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

  • A 1.5 hour poster session will take place during the conference, where attendees can browse the posters and enter a virtual room to ask the students questions.
  • Posters must be submitted to Deanne van Rooyen (deanne_vanrooyen@cbu.ca) by March 3rd.
  • Posters must be submitted in PDF 48"x 36" (1.2m by 0.9m) format.


SPECIAL “PECHA KUCHA SPEAKER” SLOTS will be available for up to 5 students. These will be filled by application, the first 5 students who apply when they submit their abstract and register will get a spot. A Pecha Kucha presentation follow a 20x20 format, where you have 20 images, and 20 seconds to talk about each one to tell your research story (6 min 40 s). There will be a special prize (new, specific to this virtual year) reserved for this category for brave souls who
want to do something a bit different!
