2022 annual conference of the SQEBC

It is with HUGE pleasure that we invite you to the SQEBC 2022 annual conference, which will be held from November 4th to 6th, 2022. This year, the congress is organized jointly by UQO (Université of Québec en Outaouais) and the Canadian Museum of Nature. This is a first for us and we are excited to welcome you to the Outaouais region!

This year's theme is: "Technology at the service of behavioral ecology".We have three exceptional keynote speakers on that will be sharing their knowledge with us! Kyle Elliott (McGill U.), Véronique Lesage (DFO) and our rising star researcher, Martin Leclerc (U. Michigan).

2022 annual conference of the SQEBC

On the program for this year

The conference is organized jointly between UQO and the Canadian Museum of Nature. We are planning a face-to-face colloquium. We will also quickly send you our "COVID19 plan for the SQEBC 2022" . If a major turnaround in the health situation occurs, we will readjust.

The Friday pm student's workshop will be held at the Canadian Museum of Nature (Gatineau Building; 1740 Pink Road in Gatineau; see map below). Museum staff kindly offered themselves to give taxonomy workshops for SQEBC students! Students will be introduced to the identification of different taxonomic groups (vertebrates and invertebrates) using the Museum's impressive collection and the expertise of its staff. You will have the chance to go behind the scenes of the National Museum and see its richness! Workshop not to be missed!!!

The Friday evening plenary will be held at the Canadian Museum of Nature (Ottawa Building; 240 McLeod Street Victoria Memorial Building) in the Hatch Lounge. The plenary will be followed by a welcome cocktail and a free tour of three exhibition halls. A shuttle service will be offered to étudiant.es workshops to get from Gatineau to Ottawa (approximately 30 minutes). For those not participating in friday workshops, head directly to the Victoria Building. Take a look at the Museum's website, it's worth a visit !!! https://nature.ca

The Saturday morning plenaries, the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning presentations, as well as the banquet will be held at UQO at the Alexandre Taché Pavilion located in Gatineau (Hull; 283 Alexandre-Taché Boulevard).

Our invited speakers

We brought together the best speakers to talk to about how technology can help behavioral ecology.

  • Kyle Elliott

    Kyle Elliott

    McGill University

Kyle received his PhD in 2014 from the University of Manitoba, where he was a Vanier Scholar and Garfield-Weston Fellow. He received his two BSc’s in Physics & Math and Conservation Biology from UBC, followed by a MSc at the University of Manitoba. He completed NSERC postdoctoral research at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Guelph prior to starting at McGill in 2015. Kyle recently received the Ned Johnston Young Investigator Award from the American Ornithologists Union. He serves on the board of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists and on the Editorial Board of the Marine Ecology Progress Series. He has conducted research on four continents from the Amazon to the Arctic, but specializes in the Canadian Arctic where he has studied birds on 14 of the islands in the Canadian Archipelago over the past 15 years. The sustainability of Arctic communities depends on their access to clean and abundant food, which is the subject of Dr. Elliott’s research at McGill.

  • Véronique Lesage

    Véronique Lesage

    Fisheries and Ocean Canada (DFO)

Dr. Lesage did her graduate studies on marine mammals. Her master's degree, completed at Laval University, focused on the effect of boat and ferry noise on the vocal behaviour of belugas. She continued her doctoral studies at the University of Waterloo on food ecology of harbour seals. She has been a researcher on cetaceans at risk at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute of Fisheries and Oceans Canada since 2000. Her research focuses on several aspects of species ecology and anthropogenic and climatic threats, and affects several species such as beluga, blue whale, fin whale, right whales and even sea turtles. She is the principal author of all contributions published on the St. Lawrence beluga over the past 25 years. For her presentation, she will talk about the decline of the St. Lawrence beluga population, the current state of knowledge as to the probable causes of it.

  • Martin Leclerc

    Martin Leclerc

    Michigan University

Dr. Leclerc's research aims to better understand the effects of human activities on the ecology and evolution of wildlife. He mainly uses geomatics and statistical models to combine environmental, ecological and genetic data to quantify the influence of climate change, habitat modification and human harvest on the behaviour, reproduction and survival of wildlife species. The results of his research bring new knowledge to important theoretical questions and help to develop effective actions for the management and conservation of biodiversity.
