Oral Presentation Guidelines

All presentation slots are 15 minutes in duration and will be strictly enforced. Presentations should be at most 13 minutes in length, leaving the remaining time for questions and the transition to the next speaker. An LCD projector and dedicated PC (with Windows 11 and MS Office 11) will be in the session room. If you do not intend to use MS PowerPoint or pdf, please advise the program chairs at icft@glfc.org and we will work with you to find a solution. Presenters may not use their own laptops. Projectors and screen will be configured for widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) - please ensure your presentation is appropriately formatted.

Uploading Presentations

We strongly encourage speakers to upload their presentation at least 24 hours PRIOR to their scheduled presentation time AND to bring a backup copy of your presentation to your session on a jump drive. We have set up a Secure Box folder to receive presentations.

Please label your presentation file as follows: Day_HHMM_FirstInitialLastname

(e.g., for a presentation Tuesday June 10, at 10:20 a.m. by Tim Johnson: your file name should be TUES_1020_TJohnson). You can verify the day and time of your presentation by visiting the program page on the conference website at https://event.fourwaves.com/7thicft/schedule.

Important Reminders

Be sure to name your file correctly on your hard drive BEFORE you attempt to upload it to the Box account.
You do not need to have a Box account to upload files.
Once files are uploaded, they cannot be edited. If you need to replace the file, another can be uploaded. The most recently uploaded file will be used.
Box will display a confirmation screen to verify that your presentation was uploaded successfully.

Please include a no camera icon on your first slide if you do not wish people to share your work on social media (including photos, videos, or audio). You may also wish to state at the beginning of your talk that you do not wish your presentation to be recorded or shared through social media. If giving consent, consider including your social media handles to facilitate attributing your work.

Laptops will be available near the registration desk to enable you to preview your pre-loaded talk. Please note these computers are not networked to the presentation room, so any changes you make will have to be transferred by you to the presentation computer (see below).

If you absolutely must upload your presentation onsite, please bring it on a jump drive to the A/V technician in the presentation room (Grandview I) at a minimum in the break preceding your presentation time. ICFT makes no guarantees talks will be successfully loaded when brought to the presentation room as time is limited. Volunteers will be available to assist with the uploading.

How to Make an Amazing Presentation

Remember your audience is both trying to listen to you and read your slides. Keep font large, and text to a minimum (ideally 3 bullets of no more than 6 words each). Figures should be simple and straightforward to emphasize the main point. Ensure axes labels are large, and colours and patterns are easily contrasting for people in the back of the room.
