Training Workshops at the 1st African Meteorological Society Scientific Conference
Two specialized training workshops will be held on 20 April 2026 as part of the AfMS Scientific Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, providing participants with practical insights into emerging challenges and technologies in atmospheric science and disaster monitoring.
The morning session (09:00-12:00), led by Prof. Solomon Bililign, will focus on Air Pollution in Africa, exploring the sources, impacts, and measurement of atmospheric pollutants and the urgent need for stronger monitoring and technical capacity across the continent. The afternoon session (13:00-16:00), led by Dr. Arif Albayrak (NASA/UMBC), will examine how Artificial Intelligence and satellite data are transforming disaster monitoring and decision-support systems, including applications in flood prediction and wildfire detection.

Professor, Department of Geography and Environmental Systems (GES), University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Director, Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II (GESTAR II)

Arif Albayrak is a Senior Research Engineer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) through Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research (GESTAR II). His current work location is NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Biospheric Sciences Laboratory. He is also a member of the NASA Earth Science Disaster Group.

Dr. Giulia Panegrossi is Senior Research Scientist at the National Research Council of Italy -Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (CNR-ISAC) where she is chair of the research Macroarea “Climate and Meteorology, modeling and Earth Observations (CAMEO)”.

Professor, Departure of Geography and Immediate past Director, Directorate of General Studies, Benue State University, Makurdi, Nigeria.

Professor of Physics and Applied Sciences and Technology North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, USA

Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye is leading the African Center of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD); prior to that, he served as head of the Senegalese meteorological department for 5 years. ACMAD is engaging with humanitarian organizations to provide climate and weather information services (CIS) to inform decisions and anticipate weather-related hazards.


Dr. Erin Dougherty is a scientist at NSF NCAR where she uses a combination of high-resolution atmospheric and hydrological models to study future changes to extreme precipitation, understand the impacts of cloudseeding on water resources, and couples both models together to improve forecasts. She is also a member of the WMO World Weather Research Programme steering group “Integrated Prediction of Precipitation and Hydrology for Early Actions” (InPRHA) which is focused on integration precipitation and hydrology research for early warning systems.

Mario Marcello Miglietta is director of research at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-ISAC) since 2019. He has been a member of the Institute Steering Committee and is currently the coordinator for the macro area "Climate and Meteorology, modeling and Earth Observations" (65 people).

Mr. Zablon W. Shilenje serves as a Technical Coordinator, Services, at the WMO Regional Office for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Jimmy Adegoke is an award-winning climate scientist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC), where he served as Chair of the Department of Geosciences from 2008 to 2010 and Director of the UMKC Center for Applied Environmental Research (CAER) for over a decade

Professor Tsegaye Tadesse is a research professor of applied climate and remote sensing in the School of Natural Resources (SNR) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is also a Geospatial coordinator of the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC).

Chris is a renowned Professor of Agro-Climatology and environmental geography, known for his extensive leadership, research, and policy advisory roles in climate change, natural resource management, and sustainable development.

Dr. Christopher L. Castro is the Director of the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) at the National Science Foundation-sponsored National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF-NCAR), located in Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Professor Zachariah Debo Adeyewa is Professor of Satellite Meteorology and Climate Change in the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (Nigeria).

Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a is the Director General of Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), the Permanent Representative of Tanzania with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Ing. Professor Emmanuel Wendsongré Ramdé is the Executive Director of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL). He is a mechanical engineer, an energy and climate change specialist, and a project management, monitoring, and evaluation expert.

Dr. Kandis Boyd is a trailblazer, an advocate, and a renowned expert in Portfolio Management, Strategic Leadership, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Dr. Boyd is the President and CEO of Professor S.T.E.A.M., which focuses on creating pipelines of future STEAM enthusiasts.

Dr. Owiti Zablone is a climate scientist and services expert with over 18 years of experience advancing climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development in Africa. He currently serves as the Regional Climate Advisor for Eastern and Southern Africa at NORCAP.

Dr. Bachir Annane is an Associate Scientist at the University of Miami (CIMAS/HRD) with over two decades of expertise in numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, and hurricane research. He currently serves as a NASA Principal Investigator on data-impact studies evaluating the influence of CYGNSS data on tropical cyclones.

Babatunde Abiodun is a Professor of Climate Science, Director of the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research, and Chairholder of the South Africa National Research Chair in Ocean and Atmospheric Modelling at the University of Cape Town.

Belay Demoz is a Physics Professor at UMBC and a leader within the GESTAR-II NASA cooperative institutes. With a career spanning NASA, Howard University, and UMBC, he specializes in atmospheric boundary layer processes, climate observation, and equity in climate policy.
